  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Is there a truly rabbit-savvy vet in Wrexham?

Young Bun
Whenever I take my little bun to the vets I just get the impression that all they know are the basics. Does anyone on here know of a genuinely rabbit-savvy vet in the Wrexham area? Thanks.

Thank you. I hope they know of someone. I do wonder why vets aren't taught more about rabbits as standard during their training, as surely they must realise how many people get rabbits as pets. I can't help resenting paying them for a 'consultation' when I don't feel I'm getting the benefit of any knowledge, but I'm forced to pay the consultation fee for an injection. I don't resent paying money for my little bun at all, I just want to have some confidence in the vets who are charging me.

Goodluck.

Richard at Cranmore (by Costco in Chester) is very good but may be a bit far if it is for routine. He also does cover at Chester Gates hospital/emergency vet which is next door and part of Cranmore.

Thank you so much for suggesting this. I've no idea where Cranmore or Chester Gates surgeries are but I will have a look. As you say maybe a bit far for routine but I do want to find somewhere that will to perky look after my little guy if he needs an operation or similar. Thanks again.

If you look up Costco Chester it is opposite there (past Ewloe and Deeside if that is any help). Chester Gates is a referral/emergency hospital and is open 24/7/365 in case you ever need it (I have had to go on 2 Christmas days consequtively with 2 different bunnies whos condition was serious in the past  )

I hope your bunnies recovered. My concern is that my little guy might need an operation some time and I just am so concerned about entrusting my beautiful boy to my vets for anything invasive.

She had severe statis and was admitted over a weekend. The vet went out to the shops to get some pineapple in the hope it would encourage her to start eating. I questioned him on everything he did for her and he had a thorough explanation as to why he was / was not doing things. I think he liked the fact I knew a little bit about bunnies and he said I was not the "normal" owner.

She was discharged to our local vet and made a full recovery but I do believe if it was not for him doing all the right things initially she would not have made it. Our local vet was excellent too (but too far away for you) and continued with the treatment.

I would have no hesitation in using him again for a "serious" condition. He also keeps up to date with Molly Varga (who is a specialist in buns)

Thank you for asking.
