Californian rabbits for meat on preloved

bunniesgalore

Alpha Buck
A friend told me she'd seen a bunny on preloved that's the runt of the litter and has undeveloped teeth-for sale. I had to see fr myself and it's true. What really broke me was Californian rabbit s 'for sale as pet or really good meat'. Good God. Rupert is Californian. I can't bear to think how they are being treated and what will happen to them. I'd take them myself but just can't afford them-and he could have lots. 'Unrelated trios are £40'. He mustbreed them for this. I feel murderous.

I had a Californian as well, hoping someone will get her and give her the love and attention she needs.

Is it just the one (the runt) he is advertising as meat or pet? or all of them?

Can you give me a bit more information please as to how I could find the advert myself, i.e. what would I need to put in search box. I would take at least one on if I can find them.

Sorry. Tablet needed charging. The little bun-runt is in Doncaster and the Californians in Boston, I wrote to the 'runt' bunny lady asking her to contact a rescue and gave her rabbit rehome website, I told her the bun is special needs and if she sells to just anyone they may not understand the dental needs and the bun will suffer and could starve. I asked her to be patient over Christmas and if she has any problems to get back to me.
The Californians I just fear are in large quantities. 3 unrelated for £40 suggests breeding. I am in Lincolnshire but no transport. I can't afford to take any on really but just tormented. So scared for all. Sorry to make you all upset too but really troubled by these.

I've just spoken to the guy in Havant, Hampshire and his will be ready in 5 weeks. So upset to hear that they are bred for meat, and are slaughtered at 12 weeks. He does advertise them though, so that they do have the option to be sold as a pet first.

Of course they can do that, people wouldn't bat an eyelid if someone was selling chickens or cows for meat but for some reason it's different with a 'pet animal'. The californian breed was made to be a meat breed, personally I think it's great that people are raising animals for meat themselves, knowing how the animal has been raised rather than buying something from the supermarket that's been battery raised

For all you know they could be looked after a lot better than a lot of the rabbits rehomed on there. I imagine if someone is paying a fair bit and going to the effort of looking after them rather than just picking up meat from the supermarket, they'll look after them well or there's not really any point in raising your own

This is all coming from a vegetarian by the way

Could you let me have the details for the bun-runt please, as I am currently looking for a 'special needs' bunny, and my vet specialises in dental surgery on rabbits. I understand completely where you are coming from, but if it helps, I have spoken at length with a guy called Stewart who breeds Californians for meat, but he did sound a really nice guy. He has assured me that all his rabbits are very well looked after, and have very spacious accommodation and runs, and his children apparently spend a lot of time with the rabbits, and play with them, but sadly yes at 12 weeks they are slaughtered. He does always advertise them first though, so that they have the option to be sold as pets instead of for meat.

To be perfectly honest, after speaking to one of the breeders advertising on Preloved, I'm inclined to agree with you. They do sound as though they are really well looked, and ok they have very short lives if not sold as pets, but as you say maybe that is in some ways preferable to the thousands and thousands that spend years suffering. I was really shocked and upset when I saw the advertisements, but after speaking to one of the guys, there does seem to be a lot of love and care put into raising these rabbits.

That's good to hear.
I agree with DemiS too, small scale breeding for meat like this generally has much higher welfare than the stuff you get in the supermarket.

At least one of these bunnies otherwise destined for meat, will now have a fantastic home to come to in 5 weeks, because of your thread about them. I have spoken to the guy and he did sound really nice and caring to be honest. The buns at the moment are only 3 weeks and unsexed, but when they have been sexed in a week or so, he is going to contact me if has got a female, which I would imagine he would have out of 5, as I would have her then as a potential bond for my French Lop. It was nice to hear that he does not take the babies away until 8 weeks, as so many babies seem to be sold on at 6 weeks, and he does sound as though he really does care about his rabbits. Hope that makes you feel a bit better, and you have saved one now anyway.

Sorry I can't post a link with my tablet but here's the details:
'good home wanted for this special boy...' I put this into search and it came up. In 'other livestock,. She's in Doncaster and actually seems to have a couple of others-siblings I think. He's a Netherland dwarf and teeny and his bottom teeth grow really quick-his teeth don't line up properly. He loves to cuddle and nestle up round her neck. He's really tiny small etc etc but has to go as she needs to downsize. Hope you find him. Sorry I can't post a link.
I'm a veggie too and appreciate what you are saying re meat bunnies. Just hate them advertising as such. Makes me think any Tom, **** or Harry will get them and kill them themselves. So glad my Rupert's safe. He's a breed that gets a seriously bun deal in life.

Actually this guy assured me that the rabbits are humanely killed by himself. The rabbits aren't sold for others to kill, so you don't need to worry about that.
