Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Panacuring a skinny bunny

I have seen 2 different vets now, both with differing opinions.

My foster boy was very skinny, he was treated with abx for snuffles. Eating fine etc but not putting on any weight. He was skin and bones.
The vet put him on panacur and a couple of days later he started putting weight on.
3 weeks ago he was 0.97 kgs and today he weighs 1.82kgs. He is approx 16 weeks old. He is still fairly skinny for his size, but not unhealthily so.

My question is could it be the panacur helping him put on weight?
I thought weightloss with EC was down to some of the problems caused by it (i.e Kidney Damage) and not be the remedy to the weightloss.
He is on day 23 of Panacur now.

Panacur is a wormer as well isn't it? Could he have had worms (of the stomach variety) that were causing him not to gain weight? I don't know if rabbits even get them.

Yeah they can do, but they are normally quite obvious, and I believe it would have to be quite a heavy infestation to cause such bad skinnyness. Definitely no obvious worms.

Just had a quick chat with Faye (a friend who is an amazing bunny vet) who mentioned the possibility of neoplasia  He has a lump on his nose which could be (amongst a couple of other things) a tumour.
If it is the panacur can supress some of the neoplasia and cause weight gain (that is the very short story. I can't remember the longer version, I am very tired)
We plan to xray and biopsy (if necessary) the lump after Christmas.

I really hope it is just a congenital defect or scar tissue.
