  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Are there any questions that I need to ask my vet?
I've used the vets many times before for cats and dogs, I have an amazing relationship with them. I've been made aware that 'they do a lot of rabbits' however I want to be certain before I put my little girl through the operation.

As well as this, what should I do/expect after she's spayed?

Thank you :thumb:

If they say "don't feed her the morning before the spay", turn in the other direction and find another vet. Rabbits can't vomit so feeding (hay, pellets etc) is important to minimise stress and keep their gut moving.

Metacam afterwards is important as a spay is a big op for a little bun :thumb:

Eereemmmm.. Not sure what else you could ask, I can't really remember

Do you mean for before the spay or after?
I am confused, your title suggests questions for her after spay check up, but your post makes me think she hasn't been spayed yet?

If she hasn't had the op yet I would ask if they do internal/dissolvable sutures. This reduces the likely hood of them being nibbled/pulled out.
Pain relief is essential after the op, we always give 3 days worth post op.
Keeping her inseide (if she is an outdoor bun)
How long to rest her for post op.

For her post op check up I don't know what you would want to ask as it depends if any problems have arisen after the op...

Sorry I've only just noticed my title. It was meant to say 'pre' however my iPad likes to make me look like an idiot.
Thanks for the advice.

no probs, I haven't had much sleep so managed to confuse myself over the wording. It doesn't take much.
