Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Rabbit with no tear duct?

Is it possible for a rabbit not to have a tear duct?
My little foster bunny is about 17 weeks old and had snuffles (waiting for c&s results to come back) and a weepy eye. It is clear discharge. The vet has tried to flush the tear duct but apparently the bunny doesn't have one... I just wondered if this was possible or not? He is going to see a rabbit savvy vet once the c&s results are back (hopefully by end of week) for now he is having baytril twice daily. He is fine and bright and eating like a pig (he is still quite skinny, he weighed 0.97kg 3 weeks ago and is now 1.7kg, going by ear size he should be a big boy, I would say he has some giant in him! I reckon he should be about 2ish kg by now if he wasn't poorly).

Graham's Ginger has malformed tear ducts that are not really tear ducts. Biscuit manages them for her :thumb:

I knew there was somebun on the forum with that problem. :thumb: Thanks.
Although getting him a friend isn't easy at the moment, he really needs castrating but need to get snuffles sorted first. Then he is only a foster bun so will be looking for a home with a little girly bunny. If a girly needs fostering at any point I will foster her too and rehome them as a pair so he can have his eye goop groomed away

In some rabbits with congenitally filter tubes, only a minor extra problem can cause long lasting blockage of the tubes.Such issues can consist of...bacterial disease blocking the simplified tubes,

Stephen has a problem with one of his tear ducts but Ellie looks after it or I give his fur a good clean. Doesn't cause him any problems and the vet couldn't flush his either as it's malformed she thinks.
