How often do you trim your bunnies nails?

margarita

Young Bun
Im afraid to do it myself so i bring her to the vet for a mani ($25). its seems after a month she needs them cut again. How long do you let their nails get until you trim them?

Thanks
Laura

I do mine once a month. They are house rabbits and so their claws don't wear down naturally. I just take a little of each claw to avoid risk of causing any bleeding.

I do one foot a week as trying to do all four in one go ends up with two very stressed bunnies and one very scratched mummy! They tend to grow so I can cut about 3mm off every 3-4 weeks.

As little or often as they need doing, some can go ages others every few weeks, more in the winter as less time out

When they need doing. I did them today actually. The last time they were done was during their vaccination which was early August time so roughly four months ago. Mine are house bunnies but are on textured lino and blankets and the lino seems to helps to wear them a bit.

Apart from Nutmeg today was surprisingly easy  and Nutmeg wasn't as bad as she has been in the past! I go for the do it quick and get it done with approach. I get someone else to hold her back while I do the front ones and half trance her to do the back ones but I can get it done in about a minute like that. Otherwise it's about half an hour of me coaxing her and her keep running away from me or her struggling and getting all stressed. The other two I just put on my lap and do each paw and cradle them in the crook of my arm (in an upright position) to get to the back ones.

Whenever I see they've grown a fair amount past the quick or the fur on their paws (If you're struggling with nail cutting, a good tip is that the quick rarely comes forward further than the fur on the rabbits paw, although you may want to check by shining a torch under the nail if its dark. So now with my white bunny I just cut right up to the quick and with the ones with brown nails I just do it up till the fur)

i also take my buns to the vet for their "pawdicure", usually every 3 to 6 months, Edward is a little digger so his nails don't get as long as Bella's. having said that, neither of them appear to suffer with long nails.

I'm not sure, just when they get a bit long.

I have someone hold Scamp, right way up, same as you'd usually hold a bun to you, then just nab a paw at a time.

Does your bun have white or dark nails? Dark nails are harder as you can't see the quick so well. If you have a look with a torch first that will let you see where it's okay to cut.

I take Spenser to the vet. He hates being handled, and is an awful wriggler. There is no way I could do it safely myself, and none of my family or local friends can hold him at all.

As to how often, I really think this can vary quite a lot. Indoor buns wear their claws down less, usually, but it depends on surface-type and how active the bun has been.

Whenever I take mine to the vet, so every 6 months really... they charge like £10 for it, and dont even give me a discount after zoid has lost 3 of his toes :( :p

When they go to the vets...none of my rabbits are particularly happy about being held and although they are ok (apart from wriggly rosey) once they are up they start fretting if i start messing about with them! At the vets they tend to be in the rabbit in headlights type statue and let the vet do what they want!

I always take mine downstairs, out of their comfort zone to just unsettle them slightly so they sit in my lap happier. If I tried doing it in their room they've been off under the bed.

Not sure - every 6-8 weeks I would guess - they're mainly on carpet so they don't really wear.

Haven't had to do the outdoor ones yet but have only had them about 6 weeks. This has reminded me I need to get some bigger nail clippers (we use guinea pig ones for the nethies!).

I take Doughnut about once every 3 months. I get them done when she has her vaccination and general health check. I can feel when they need doing but as she's a little wriggler and hates being picked up she goes to see the nurse to do it. Less stressful.

I've had Peter for 3 months and had his nails clipped for the first time 2 weeks ago, the vet nurse commented that they actually werent very long ( alittle sharp) and she said that was probably due to his run being on patio at the moment.

I wouldnt fancy doing it myself!!!

Bramble is off to the vets tomorrow for a nail trim. He is an indoor bunny now, so we are just getting to grips with having them done more regulary....I haven't actually told him this yet.....gulp!

Sugarbun goes to the doggie parlour every six weeks or so. The woman who does it is AMAZING :thumb: Because Sugar is half Angora and here in South Africa it gets very hot, she will shave (while still keeping it long) Sugar's fur, remove any shedding hair, check her bum for knots and clip her nails. It costs me the equivalent of about 4 pounds and I'm really lucky to have a specialist like that in a country where rabbits are still considered "exotic" pets :D
