Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Bun has abscess, op tomorrow

I noticed a day or 2 ago that one of my girl bun's cheeks felt bigger than the other, then today it felt more like a marble kind of under her chin on right hand side. I took her to the vet and it turned out to be an abscess as I thought it might be. She hasn't had one before. The vet squeezed it and pus came out her mouth from the tooth, (i didn't think they were meant to burst them?!)
He injected her with antibiotics and took a swab of the pus.
He wants to operate tomorrow and take out the tooth, drain the abscess then make an external hole that I can keep draining the pus from externally till it's healed.
I'm worried sick about the op and just wanted to hear from anyone who has had this happen with their bun and how have you found looking after the open wound?
I'm so scared and feel sick. I love her so much :'(
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Not a bun, but I've had a cat have an abscess removed. Cleaning the hole was fairly gross! I think I used cotton wool and hibiscrub. It healed before all the pus was out, she knocked the scab off, and I nearly fainted!

So it was gross, but it healed fine :) Hope the op goes well and she's home soon. Sending lots of vibes xx

Abscesses are nasty!

I have had to deal with a few, luckily none in the tooth. I had to clean them out with iodine, squeeze out the pus and pack with Manuka Honey. Nice!

Thanks for your replies so far and vibes. The vet just rang I have to go in at 5. lily is coming around from the anaesthetic at the moment. The infection is around her tooth apparently so he hasn't removed the tooth in case it makes it worse. He's removed the salivary gland though and drained the abscess and I think he's going to show me how to do that too.

Good luck!

Hopscotch had an abscess in his nasal cavity which was operated on. He has a big hole in the side of his face for a while :( I had to clean it out every day to make sure it healed from the inside out, rather than skin just growing over it. If you need any tips then let me know!!
