  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

What was it?

Lulu had to be put down last night but the vet didn't know what was wrong and i was wondering if anyone on here had any ideas what it was.

at about 9pm I noticed one of her eyes was huge and both were bleeding massively. she was eating normally and moving around still. But she was obviously blind. She then developed difficulty breathing and seemed to be in a lot of pain.

Couple of details she was 6 years old netherland dwarf. A house rabbit that's completely free range goes where she wants when she wants. Only other animal is a dog.

I am really upset that she's gone I just wish I knew what it was and if it was preventable.

thanks

I'm so sorry you lost her  A post mortem would be the only way to know for sure, but possibly a burst abcess behind the eye, maybe a bleed on the brain. I know VHD would cause bleeding, but I'm not sure about the bulging. Was she vaccinated? Others will know more than me xx

I'm afraid I don't know the reason but I just wanted to say that I'm very sorry for your loss. Sleep tight little one.

As others have said a post mortem would be the only sure way to know - but it does sound like a peri-orbital abcsess that then burst.
