Rexy feets

Am I right in thinking carpet is not the best idea for little rexy feet? I thought it would be so carpetted Snoopy and Daisy's kennel. Daisy now has little sore patches appearing
What is the best thing? The kennel is 10ft x 5ft so I don't think all hay or substrate would be the best, as I just have no where to put all the waste. Are those foam mats like

The first picture looked fuzzy, like soft material. Looks perfect.
Now to tell OH that the carpet needs to be ripped up over Christmas and this laid

It kind of depends on the carpet. I don't use any bedding at all for my rexes as they would simply eat any carpet I put in... (I have tried... Fleece mats mostly and once even a pillow but they were all completely ruined within a few days. And it doesn't help that one of them is notorious for breaking all of his toys and somehow tearing his water bottle of the wall.) Instead...well they have some hay on the floor.
