Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

possibly pregnant rex bunny

I have taken in a rescue bunny - a 18 week old female rex. She has been kept with her 2 brothers prior to me taking her in. She has a swollen tummy and prominant teats. I am assuming she is pregnant.... I have been told that the rex gene is a fatal gene... and that a mating between a rex and a rex will cause dead kits.... is this true?

Utter RUBBISH !!

The Doe, if pregnant, may well reject/scatter the kits as she is just a baby herself  Same would apply to any 18 week old Doe

Can you get her examined by a Vet to determine :

A- If she is pregnant

B- If she is, how far advanced

c- If an emergency spay would be less of a risk to her than to kindle a potentially large litter (6-8 kits) whilst still a baby herself.

If she really is only 18 weeks old I would be quite surprised if she was pregnant, so it may be that she is actually older.

Personally a Vet check for her would be my first move

Good luck

Rex genes aren't lethal or else every single rex rabbit would be dead, since the rex-gene is recessive, every single rex rabbit has a double rex-gene. (Or else explain to me how my purebred rex-couple managed to have 12 kits in one litter o.o That wasn't a lot of fun.)

Rabbits can be fertile as early as 10 weeks, so it is a possibility she's pregnant, but let's hope not:(
