getting a continental giant

New Kit
hi guys wednesday i will be picking up a lovely 13 week old agouti conti (buck) ! im sooo sooo excited but just want to make sure im fully prepared :) .. i have a little boy that is great with animals and loooves rabbits ( a friend has rex's) ...i myself am a first time owner so any advice would be really appreciated:D

Ah awesome. The only really good bits of advice I can think of now are give him lots of space and lots of hay. Get down on his level on the floor to bond with him. But ask any questions you think of.

brill i think ive got most stuff covered supplies wise and he will have free roam of my home and a cage to escape to as well as as a one of them soft fabric dog houses in my livingroom .. im just wondering how to go about introducing him to my son and how to go about litter training?:)

what type of hay?

what type of hay also im ordering it from local farmer but he asked if i wanted stalky or fresh

Litter training won't really be achievable until he's been neutered. I mean, to start with he might but once he gets hormones he'll probably start marking and maybe even spraying.

How old is your son?

As for the hay it depends on the rabbit to be honest! Mine like stalky hay but some like green and soft.

ohh i got told they can get neutered at 4months would that be right? and my son is 2

They can be neutered as soon as their testicles have descended, usually about 14-16 weeks.

You will find a lot of information about the care of Rabbits here;

He will need his vaccination against Myxomatosis and VHD ASAP, so I would contact your Vet to arrange this

You also need to be aware that whilst Vets may be great with treating Cats and Dogs they may not be so up-to-speed on Rabbits. So establishing if the specific Vet is 'Rabbit Savvy' is an absolute essential

With introducing the Rabbit to your son, this must be done with great care so as not to scare the Rabbit. A toddler should never, under any circumstances, be left unsupervised around a Rabbit.

Rabbits are prey animals and they do not like being picked up or poked about

A gentle stroke over the top of the head, just between the ears is something a Rabbit can come to enjoy. But again trust needs to be earned so initially I'd let the Buck settle and approach you if and when he wants to. A 'no touching' from your son for the first few days.

yeah im taking him for both vaccinations .. i rang around to get prices for the vaccinations and neutered and 3 vets tried to say house rabbits dont need vaccinating after explaining they do i hung up one place even asked after i said about neutering my buck was it a boy or girl lol .. i finally found somwhere decent and will be booking them this week :)

my little boy is really good with animals as he has a guinea pig at his dads and a dog at his nans from birth ..

but i will definately have a no touch few days .. sooo excited 2 more days !!

Lots of photos please  I have an agouti male conti, and he is my world. He has such a huge personality, i love him to bits. Hopefully your new bunny will settle quickly :) x

Don't forget in all the excitement though........everything has to be done at the bunny's own pace. You and your family will need to be very patient, but hopefully this should pay off. Bear in mind all bunnies are as individual as you and I, so be understanding too.

Best of luck.:thumb:

Wow, your so lucky, I would love a giant bunny.

I think the best introduction would be for you and your little boy to just sit quietly in the middle of the floor with a few tasty treats and let the bunny come to you. They are so curious and once he realises that you have treats he wont be able to keep away. Try to keep your little boy as still and as quiet as possible (no mean fete I know) andI am sure you wont have a problem.

Do you know if he is used to being handled?

Good luck, cant wait to see the pics
