  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Crusty growth in my bunny's ear

Can anyone help?
I've just noticed my bunny has got a long crusty scab in her ear, I've never seen anything like it before.

Sounds like it might be earmites.

Does it look a bit like 'pork scratchings'?

A bit like this? http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=rabbit+ear+mites&um=1&hl=en&sa=N&tbo=d&biw=1280&bih=826&tbm=isch&tbnid=SU-CLOWEooONZM:&imgrefurl=http://www.bekindtopets.com/animals/tpvets_May909.htm&docid=WXbaVfN6vFPNCM&imgurl=http://www.kongyuensing.com/pic/20090555Crusty_Layers_Inside_Ear_Canal_Rabbit_Ear_Mites_PayohVets.jpg&w=500&h=487&ei=Spe6UMEaqbTRBe7MgaAK&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=715&vpy=491&dur=24&hovh=222&hovw=227&tx=145&ty=125&sig=113691767479336739690&page=2&tbnh=145&tbnw=154&start=35&ndsp=43&ved=1t:429,r:39,s:0,i:205

If not and it is just a scab and it's long, could it be a scab from a scratch where the rabbit has scratched its own ear with a long back nail? Or is the rabbit with a friend that could have scratched it?

No it doesn't look like that, it's just in one isolated area. If I can work out how to post a picture I'll put one up. Thanks for your help.
