  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Bunny with skin condition.

A week ago I rescued a rabbit that has quite a lumpy skin condition round her lower back area. It is large dandruffy scabby bits so am treating for mites with 1% Ivermectin drops. Now she doesn't seem itchy or bothered until I touch that area, then she is not happy so it must be sore. Is there anything I could be applying to soothe and should I try and clip the fur away?

We shouldn't really suggest anything you can or should do because it's not clear what it currently is, so we could suggest something that may aggravate it further.

I had a bunny arrive to me with something that sounds very similar only hers was not mites, hers was dermatitis, so she needed treating for an infection which is obviously very different from what you're doing now. She was also prescribed an anti inflammatory because hers was sore too.

Good luck at the vets for Monday. Also, welcome to the forum. Please don't forget to share pictures of your lovely girl :D ;)

Thanks for you advice, when I spoke to the vets they said it sounds like mites but didn't advise anything to soothe just to eradicate. I will wait but just thought there might be something for more instant relief.

Thanks for you guidance, when I talked to the investigates they said it appears to be like insects but didn't recommend anything to ease just to reduce. I will delay but just believed there might be something for more immediate comfort. I will do what have you said abut that......
