  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Ranitidine - does it increase the rabbits drinking?

I've noticed that Doughnut is drinking a lot more now she's on ranitidine. Is this because she may be eating more hay so is getting thirster or does ranitidine have nothing to do with it!

I don't know but now that you mention that Inca was drinking a lot of water when she was on Zantac recently!

Since it's the same thing maybe it does then. I guess it's a good thing unless knowing my luck she has a UTI!

To be it's healthiest, the gut needs to be very hydrated, so I wonder if gut motility drugs draw fluids to the gut to help it function better, which will mean it is drawn away from other areas and so therefore the bunny needs to drink more to account for the higher use of fluids to the gut.

Just my theory.

Well Inca was drinking loads and holding in her pee. Then peeing everywhere! I have had her up for blood tests and got a urine sample, waiting for the results. Now I am wondering if it could have been the meds!

That theory may well be right.

I can't believe doughnut would now have a urine infection as she's been on septrin and now two weeks later just finished cisapride and got another two weeks of ranitidine.

Let me know how inca gets on. Sure it must be the medicine though.

Im going to measure out what she's drinking in a day. It's definitely increased as she eats hay then drinks then more hay and another drink. The bowl is not as full.

Im hoping it's doing her good.
