  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

The purpose of this post is to stress how important company is to a rabbit's health.

Piccolo went back to the vet today because I've been treating his pneumonia (which reoccurs every couple of weeks) with Baytril injections for two weeks now without any change in the sound of his lungs - he sounds like his lungs are made of carrier bags they're that crackly.

The vet confirmed that the lung noise is caused by Emphysema rather than infection and gave him a steroid injection to try to relax his lungs, depending on how he is on Monday we may consider starting to nebulise him regularly.

But the vet could not believe how well he seemed given how awful his lungs sound.

I attribute his positive demeanor to the fact that he has recently been bonded with Preya and is now very much in love having been alone for six months since his previous girlfriend passed away.

The vet did say that how Piccolo is feeling in himself will have a massive impact on how well he deals with his condition.

Piccolo is 5 and a half years old and I hope that with Preya's support he'll be with us for a good few years yet.

I can not stress enough how much Preya seems to have made a difference to Piccolo's mental wellbeing - what a shame I can not claim for her purchase price (rescue donation) and the cost of her upkeep on Piccolo's insurance because she is definitely proving to be an effective alternative therapy :)
