The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Feeling a bit despondent - Doughnut''s still unwell

All weekend Doughnut's been unwell again, more loose fecal poops and terrible noise in her stomach when she bends over to clean herself. She's finished all her antibiotics after suspected coccidiosis.

I took a sample up to the vets to get it tested, will get the results in a week, hopefully.

She's had another couple of injectionsand then I took her to the specialist yesterday. She thinks the antibiotics may have upset her tum. She's got gas so now she's on 3 days of cisapride and 3 weeks of ranitidine. She's still loose but I guess it's early days. Can't tell about the gas until she bends over.

The specialist said she did have a few sharp teeth but nothing that should be bothering her. Just trying everything I can for her, it's now been 6 weeks. She's seems happy enough and is eating.

Sorry to mumble on about it, just want a well bunny and feel disheartened.

Aw sorry to hear about Doughnut :-( I know what it's like when you're trying to do all you can, and it still never seems enough, even if they are doing ok in themselves.

Would bannana help her tum at all? I read online that it can do, not sure if it's true or not though. Also chamomile is supposed to help.

Banana is high in sugar so I won't give her any at the moment. I've had her on hay for the last few days but the specialist said she can have her pellets so just giving her half an egg cup at the moment.

Thanks for replying though. I'm going to keep her on a basic diet and not introduce anything new for a while.

Just wonder if anyone else has had any experience of cisapride. I think her gas may have gone although I may be being hopefully!

sorry to hear she's unwell again I really would reccomend a good probiotic to help her tummy. how bad was the poo have you got any poo photos

Thank you i will look at that.

I haven't got any photos but will try. Normally she's trod it into the lino in her play pen.

I think the gas is getting better but still more splats this morning. She's eating lots of hay and is happy. Just can't see in end to it at the moment. Can't wait to be splat free.

Has she had a pro-biotic - you answered fibreplex but thats not a probiotic?

Probiotics are often things you put in the water to help add things back to the gut especially helpful when taking abx etc. They try and keep the gut in a good state.

Just also to say, there's no guarantee on fixing things, this may be the way Doughnut is and will be, try not to be dispondent, im not one to talk, as i went through a massive grieving process over Ginger's illness, but do try.

It was only when we saw the specialist and were told to stop fighting and start managing instead, knowing there was no fixing her, that i accepted it and started to really enjoy Ginger for who she was, not for getting so down about what was wrong with her. It was a real mental shift.

If Doughnuts happy, try and enjoy the good times rather than focus on the bad things :)

Thank you I will. I just hate hearing all that gas inside her and seeing her uncomfortable.

Now she's happy and I think gas free I feel a bit better, I just want her totally well. Like you say if that's the way it is then I'm happy to manage her illness, just don't want her to suffer. I can cope with a few splats if it's not affecting her but when I think she may be in pain from gas I get really upset.

I'll order some probiotic. I guess it's fine to use with ranitidine?

I'm going back to the specialists if this doesn't clear things up. Unfortunately she's off on maternity leave but there is another rabbit specialist there. She said if it doesn't clear up they will have to look at other things, maybe her teeth, although she said a few were sharp but nothing that should be affecting Doughnut. She said hardly any mini lops have great teeth!

Oh well, one step at a time.

Is Ginger OK now?
