Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Caring for thick, long coats

Muffin has long fur, it's pretty thick and 'wooly' so that you have difficulty telling which end is which! In the summer I'll have to get him clipped but I'm a little worried about what to do over winter, I have a grooming brush but it's a struggle to do a decent job with it, especially as he hates being brushed and is quite timid.

Any tips on keeping his coat in good condition and free of mats?

best advice I can give you is to keep brushing daily. Start with a soft brush and then use a small slicker, finish with a treat. he'll soon learn to love it if your gentle, mine chatter away to me while there being brushed they love it

Our SophieAnnie, is a long haired/part woolly back her fur knots from the inside to out (if you know what I mean).

She has a weekly fur trim every Sunday. She is so good for my partner Rich who gives her the fur cut (I have not got the confidence or nerve) the amount he gets off her is amazing, but it is an ongoing battle. She is so good and he can be trimming her for hours (she will always let him know when she has had enough).
