  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Scab on nose

Scarlet (fully vaccinated) has a place on her nose this morning that looks like a scab has fallen off. Any ideas? It's right in the middle of the triangular bit. She's fine in herself. We're off to the vets at half ten just to get it checked. My preferred vets aren't in but I have seen the vet we're seeing before with other pets and he's competent, but no idea how he is with buns.

Captain H - if you see this we're seeing Nik

This is odd - my first worry was myxi, but the scars fall off at the end, not at the start. Hopefully all will be well.

The vet said the same as me i.e. it looks like a scab has fallen off and suggested just leaving it (it's not weepy, looks like it might have been a little bit infected but has dried out). He also checked her genitals and gave her a good feel over, checked her front teeth and felt along her jaw and could find no other lumps or bumps (as I couldn't) except her elongated tooth roots which we know about already. He was nice enough not to charge me for telling me exactly what I thought anyway which was good :thumb:
We'll keep an eye on it and pop her back in the week if it looks to be getting any worse. She must have had something there to fall off under the fur but she's totally black and her fur is really thick so you can't really ever see anything.

Sorry I've just seen this. Glad the vet doesn't think it's myxi :D When was she vaccinated? Could be it a tiny nodule that had dropped off, I think the new vaccination can cause nodules to appear?

Glad he didn't charge a consultation fee too, that's worth remembering if I ever need a similar appointment and Nigel's not in. (JF once charged me a full consultation fee for what I considered to be a pre op check :?)

She had the combi vac months ago, around July. Nigel only checked her teeth last week though and it was right on the tip of her nose so I think we'd have seen something. I think I'll email him and see what he says.

She could have scratched it. Ori could even have accidentally kicked her during one of his mad binky sessions. He's landed on her head before; he looked more startled than she did! Have emailed Nigel and will bob her in later in the week if needbe. She's 100% fine in herself.

Thanks JJ, was hoping you'd pick this up at some point. Doesn't look like syphillis, it's dry and just the one patch and her genitals are competely normal. If it doesn't clear up I'll post a pic.
PS: Made me cringe a bit to think little my bun could have an STD, I'm sure she's not a slapper ;)

Sometimes it is only the nose that is effected. It is not always transmitted by.......ahem....... 'naughties'....... it can be transmitted from Doe to Kits during kindling.
