Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Bunny dragging her back legs

New Kit
Last Tuesday I noticed that one of my three bunnies seemed to be dragging her back legs and was slipping on the grass and hutch, unable to fully support her weight at the back of her body.

I took her to the vets and she ruled out EC, examined her fully and came to the conclusion she had sustained an injury due to being scared of something or chased by one of my other rabbits. She was given two antibiotic injections and I was told to keep an eye on her for 48 hours.

She improved quickly but has now gone back to how she was last Tuesday.

She is eating, drinking and moving around fine otherwise. She doesn't appear to be in any pain and is still running around like she should be.

Should I take her back to the vets? Or should I strap her up at the back to support her and give her time to heal?

I am at a bit of a loss and don't want her to start being picked on by the other rabbits as she is an animal of prey and showing herself very much injured.

Any advice would be great!

Thank you

If Ec has been ruled out I would 100% be asking for x-rays to see what damage there is to her spine. This will at least give you some idea of her chance of improvement.

I would not strap her back up as it could do more harm than good and could also restrict movement, breathing and her guts. Once you know exactly what is wrong then you can take the appropriate steps to help her :D

Good luck x

What made the Vet so sure EC is not involved ?

Was a Long Acting STEROID given aswell as the antibiotics ? If so this may account for the initial apparent recovery and now the relapse as the effects of the steroid have worn off.

I would definitely take her back to the Vet again ASAP

Good Luck

this happened to my old girl Biscuit. She was given metacam and it worked great for a couple of months then her back legs went again, the metacam wasnt strong enough to relieve the pain. We were told there was nothing more they could do as she was a very old girl. I would suggest going back to the vets with your bunny. Sorry its nothing positive from me but I felt you should be aware.

Thank you everyone for your help. I think the best thing is to take her back in as soon as possible. I have been recommended a vet who specialises in small animals so maybe he will give an x-ray and different opinion? As for now, I have padded the hutch out so there is plenty of soft landings for her. Fingers crossed
