  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Misty has Laboured Breathing

tonibun

Wise Old Thumper
Arrived home to find Misty with her head held up and breathing fairly fast. Any ideas? Vets open at 3 pm. She is 6.

Acute pneumonia possibly, I'd get her to the Vet now and bang on their door. It is critical she receives emergency treatment

If she is not spayed then uterine adenocarcinoma is a possibility- uterine cancer which has spread to her lungs

sending lots of vibes for her

Misty perked up a bit on the way to the vets so she was not breathing as badly. Vet examined her, heart fine, didn't think it was an infection and not pneumonia as her temperature was a little on the low side if anything. So she's been given 2 injections, Abx and one to open up her airways and baytril to bring home for tomorrow unless she has derteriorated in which case she has to go for further tests. She was eating just now so will have to see how things are in the morning.

No, I told the vet she wasn't but she didn't make any comment. If uterine cancer has spread to her lungs what is the prognosis?

Sending vibes! I hope she'll be ok! I have a snuffly boy myself who occasionally breathes through his mouth, it's not nice to watch :(

Misty is more or less as normal. Breathing is normal and she is eating but she is eating slowly. If she had teeth problems that wouldn't have caused difficulty breathing, would it?

I had a bunny who was breathing wrongly- somewhat fast, for ages and we could find no reasons, however, many months down the line he needed a dental and his breathing returned to normal after his dental, so it's perfectly possible for it to affect her breathing. I suppose, like with people, if something hurts we may breathe differently to try and cope with the pain.

Misty seems more or less normal today. She's eaten some cabbage and dried food. Her breathing seems ok except when you look at her sideways on there is like a pulsation effect halfway down her body so I don't know whether that is indicative of anything or not. I'm a bit dopey when it comes to health things! Her eyes seem to be half closed but maybe that is because she has a thick winter coat and it's covering her eyes a bit.

Misty was PTS yesterday, the Vet thought it was the best way forward. We bought her some more time last Friday with a Steroid injection etc and she was quite well over the weekend but by yesterday she wasn't eating. The Vet checked her teeth last Friday but could not see any problems there. She leaves Spenser who is 9.1/2 behind, so whether I can find a female for him is unknown atm. He is the most loving husbun a girl could wish for!
