  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Myxi advice please?

Hi there. Wondered if anybody could help? I recently lost one of my bunnies to myxi. Even though he was vaccinated. He was with us for about seven days before we said goodbye to him. His brother then started showing signs of it. He had a sore red bit on his right eye. This has now turned into a lump. He is absolutely fine, eating and running around like a crazy bun as is usual. Took him for a check up last week and vet seemed confident he would be ok. He is still getting lumps though. A lump under his chin, his nose and his head and ear. Is this normal? Do the lumps just drop off? He is on antibiotics and anti-inflammatories. Advice would be gratefully received.

Vaccinated buns often get a form called nodular myxi. This can vary in severity. I've had four vaccinated buns catch myxi in the last few weeks. One had to be pts; one got two small lumps and a respiratory infection but was treated with antibiotics and is now fine. The other two were somewhere in between. It sounds as if your bun is doing well and doesn't have it too severely. You just need to keep medicating and keep an eye on him, watching out for respiratory and eye problems in particular. The lumps may take a while to drop off - Mulberry still has hers 7 weeks in.

Try doing a search for myxi on the forum - there have been several threads about it, especially this one....

Hope that helps and that your bun recovers fully

Thank you for your reply. Seems like there is an epidemic of myxi at the moment. Another question. I have a spayed girly bun who is on her own so want to put her with Duncan (who has the myxi). She is spayed and vaccinated. When can i put them together?

I would wait until Duncan is well over Myxi. Sorry you lost one of your buns and hope Duncan makes a full recovery soon.
