Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Misfit has snuffles

katie88

Mama Doe
She's on baytril for 10 days which will be extended if not improved by then.

The vet said it's important to eliminate sources of dust with snuffle buns. He even suggested I remove ALL hay and feed a pellet and grass only diet. This really concerns me as Misfit had stasis about 6 months ago and since then I've been doing everything I can to increase her hay consumption. Does anyone else have any views on this? It was a different vet to the one I've seen before and he didn't fill me with much confidence so I figured RU could help :D

P.S. I should add I have no experience with snuffles so any general advice would be gratefully received!

We have an enormous snuffles thread on here if you can finnd it. All I can advise is no shavings, no dust or smoke of any description, no stress (if that's possible) but I would still give hay unless it's particularly dusty. I hope your bunny manages to get over it, oh and keep bedding very clean - no ammonia fumes (most important)

Snuffles

Hi,
I purchased two bunnies last year (both girls) and one of them had the snuffles from the moment I got her home. I took her to the vets who gave her a treatment of anti-biotics and said that she may have an allergy to the hay. The medication seemed to work for a while but the snuffles returned. We were given some oral anti-biotics to give her twice a day for a week which helped but did not cure the snuffly noise completely. She has had X-Rays and teeth checked but to no avail.
Since then, Georgie our poorly bunny has lost weight and she is now seeing another vet who specialises in bunnies (which our vet recommended) we took her today. He has told us that she has pneumonia, she is being kept in overnight to have more X-Rays, bloods and an injection of penicillin.
We pick her up tomorrow and the vet is going to show us how to inject her as we will have to do this every day for the next month.
Hope your bunny gets better

Hiya, I have had the same problem with my rabbit for a while now! We have tried all the meds and now gone done the route of X-rays for his teeth as think that it causing the problem! But I did change all his food and even moved to paper bedding! All seemed to help but didn't cure the problem! Their is a rabbit specialist at Newton abbot area that is meant to be excellent I have just be referred to him so will let you know how good he is! Hope that helps

Evie had snuffles when we got her and was put on a course of septrin, which kept the snuffles about the same and did lead to her having runny poo. As it wasn't improving we tried herbal remedies - we sprinkled (and still do) a red raspberry leaf tablet on her food and put echnicea in her water along with rabbit vitamin drops from Pets at Home. The snuffles have stopped and seem to be kept at bay by doing this - our vet is more than happy for us to do this and has recommended it other snuffle bunny owners for whom septrin/baytril hasn't worked. I hope that helps.

Thanks for all your replies.

Cayla do you know the name of the vet in newton abbot? Would be useful for future reference and please let me know how you get on.

Laura where do you get the raspberry leaf & echinacea from and how much do you use? I am all for trying the natural methods!

If you are worried about dust try feeding dampened or wet hay, it gets rid of the dust and means you don't have to cut the hay out.

I would never cut a buns hay, ever, I had to find all sorts of ingenious ways to keep Thor with hay when I was not allowed to bed him on hay for 2 weeks following a problematic neuter!

Obviously wet hay will be more wasteful as you will have to change it more often, I would imagine it would be able to go mouldy if left for too long!

I hope your bunster feels better soon xxx

Thank you Hele. Do you literally just wash it off and give it to the bun wet? Not too worried about wastage as I get it fairly cheap from a farmer.

I will definitely try this, thank you!

Not too sure, I've never done it myself but have seen it done by a few people on here, I assume you just dunk it, or run it under water and then feed.

If it was me I'd change it twice a day, breakfast and dinner for example, just to make sure it didn't ferment or anything scary!

I think bunnytoes has started doing this for Julie? She might be able to help...

Brill I'll get in touch with her, thanks. I change their hay twice a day anyway as Misfit is such a fussy hay eater she'll only eat it when it's completely fresh

Washing hay... the things we do for our buns!

Thanks weedug I've just ordered a sample from them. She is such a fussy hay eater I worry she will turn her nose up at it but will give it a go!

And Cayla that's great thanks, let me know how you get on?

We get the red raspberry leaf tablets and liquid echineca from holland and barrett. She gets one capsule sprinkled on about 40g of food a day (though to begin with you may want to sprinkle just half a tablet to make sure it doesn't upset 3buns tummy)and the echineca comes with a pipette, which we fill up and put in her water bottle which I think is the smaller of the two water bottles you can get so about 250ml-500ml.

you don't need to cut out hay, but you can try misting it with a spray bottle before feeding. i have two snuffle buns. we used to use dust free hay which is good but hay for pets is what we use now. in my opinion it is the best hay, no dust at all really, and definitely less so than the dust free hay.

Ian

He's the referals vet we took Ginger to.

He's not a miracle worker, but he's fantastic with rabbits and will take time to explain things, will listen to you and allow you to ask questions.

There's a million things that can be tried, but it doesnt necessarily mean they will 'cure' or are even right to try.

If its early on, you may be able to beat it, good luck.
