  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Help please! Does my bunny have snuffles?

Hi there, I have a gorgeous 3.5 year old dutch rabbit, who lives outside but he's keeping me company indoors tonight because of the fireworks!

After he had settled in the corner for a while, he started to breathe like an asthmatic - that is the best description of it - every time he breathed in and out. It was as loud I would be if breathing heavily. I googled this and have discovered something called snuffles.

However - he is as right as rain and does not have any other symptoms (no discharge from his eyes or nose, not shallow breathing, not off his food) - and also, he's only doing this when he settles down comfortably and puffs his fur out. If he notices me getting any closer to him, or he's moving around or sitting in any other position, his breathing is silent.

Can anyone give some advice - is this normal or a sign of snuffles? I will keep a close eye on him but any thoughts would be gratefully appreciated. At the moment, he would do very well on an X rated phone line

Hiya. How warm is your house? It's not great to bring outdoor rabbits in at this time of year other than into a cold room. It could be the temperature change that is affecting him.

Hiya, thank you - it's not too warm in here, I haven't had the heating on today because I knew he'd be coming in, and it's quite a cold room - although warmer than outside. I wouldn't usually bring him in but there are tons of loud fireworks near me, so it's a for one night only! I'll keep an eye on him x

Lol, we've had many a night freezing because Scarlet has needed to be in! I'd be inclined to have him checked over by a vet next week. It could possibly be that he does that when he's outside too but you're just not aware of it.

Ha ha I have two jumpers on, you must know the feeling! I'll take him to get checked out on Monday just in case. Thanks for your help
