My rabbits has just been spaded....help!!!

Oscarandlola

Young Bun
Hello,

Ok so just picked my rabbit up from being spaded. the vet said everythin went well and she has come round from it fine. But my main concerns are that the vet said that oscar needs to be eating and she cant pull at her stitches.

Now me being me and i love my rabbits to bits, i ot all the added extras.....painkillers, cone, fibreplex , vitamins.....came to a total of £97!

The thing is the vet said i need to give Oscar fibreplex 3 times a day at 2ml.......thing is i have just got home with her, let her settle in and tried to give her some.....but she doesnt seem to like it. i squirt abit out the end of the syringe and hold it in front of her mouth and she is not botherd.....i then give put abit on her mouth forcing her to lick it off......but doesnt seem right???? I dont want to force her mouth open and ram 2ml of the stuff down 3 times a day.....i think she will hate me for that!

Please anyone got any ideas? i cant really oput it in food as she doesnt seem to want to eat right now.

Also anymore hints how you get through the spade recovery would be sooooo helpful!

thanks you

If she has just got home she mig not feel like eating just yet , but have you got any herbs like basil or coriander just keep trying her with little bits she might be feeling a little bit off at the minute :)

I wouldn't force her to take any medicine tonight, just let her be quiet and rest. Put some fresh grass in her cage if she is used to it as this is what bunnies like best after the operation. Then tomorrow when you notice she has eaten something try putting the medicine on to a little piece of bread if you can't get it into her mouth. Don't worry too much as we never get anything post op and I've had lots neutered and no problems. If you can't get grass have you got some spring greens or cabbage. She won't eat her dried food possibly for a day or so. Hope she is a good girl and leaves her stitches alone. They normally remove one at least, but just let her rest then the wound will be healing.

Twinkle just slept for ages after, all evening on and off, she then had grass and then had her painkiller dripped onto a shreedie.

I kept her in overnight and the next day she was fine, she never bothered with her stitches, having said that it was a tiny incision

I agree, I've just had a bun spayed and she was uninterested in food for a good long while. I gave her lots of peace and quiet and she began to nibble late in the evening. Try syringe feeding tomorrow morning if she's not eaten anything over night but leave her be for the night. Lots of tempting treats like carrot, brocholi and celery got my Olive munching!

I occationally have to syringe feed my dental rabbit who has a good old sulk after her ops, unfortunately it is a case of popping the syringe into their mouth. Let them chew her chew at the syringe, it will help her take the food in. They don't like it all that much and you have to be as gentle as you can while giving them no real choice in the matter. I've only ever had one guinea pig who yummed down the feed of his own accord, he used to sit on a cushion on my lap and tug at the syringe when he was ready for the next mouthful! Otherwise they all get a tad grumpy and put up a bit of a fight!

As others have said, she may be too tired to eat just yet so don't panic too much. It is a big op. Mine didn't start to eat until the following day. I tend to get lots of different herbs in if mine have a GA to try to temp them. Sometimes the first thing they fancy is something strong smelling such as thyme, also kale and carrot tops are some of the first things they are interested in (you can get carrot tops from Sainsburys).

Sending her vibes for a quick recovery x

Glad it's all went well, was thinking of you earlier!

Give her a bit of peace and quiet for a while. Try to tempt her with something she likes, banana or something that is usually a treat. But don't push her, she will need to rest. Imagine hourly in the same situation. You would be on bed rest too.

In regards to the medicine, try dipping it in a bit of banana or some baby food I hear is good to trick them. But if she is still not eating, she probably won't take it yet.

As others have said . . but I see you mention a cone - these are not usually used with rabbits as it upsets them a lot (much more than other animals) and also stops then eating their essential ceacal pellets. You may want to ask the vet when they reopen tomorow whether this is really necessary - it does depend on the sort of closure used for the spay wound - but I have had many rabbits spayed by a rabbit specialist vet and never had to use a cone.

My girls didn't have a cone. But Binkys stitches came out, the top two layers of them! Was a right mess. Then she had to have a cone. I had to make sure she could eat and drink etc. and take it off when I could supervise her. But it is hard to tell if they are eating their ceacels / grooming / ripping out their stitches!

Woke up and she still has not eaten anything or drank anything or pooped anything! :( will ring vet at 11:30 if she keeps this up. Also had no luck with fibreplex again. Also the painkiller that comes with a syringe was hard too. we managed about 1/3 in her mouth. I cant force her mouth open and she looks it shut. the only reason we got 1/3 in is because she did a yawn and we took full advantage!

any help with syringe using?

When you go back to the vet insist on an injected pain killer plus gut motility drugs and syringe feeding and also syringed fluids.

These would be /normal' after a spay at most vets and I am surprised that your bun did not get them. Also ask for training in giving meds.

She probably won't eat until later now. Can you pick some grass for her or a dandelion or two as this is what she will eat first. Try not to worry, I've got 17 spayed buns and they all take different lengths of time to recover. Let us know how she gets on.

My Binky hates syringe anything. The only way to do it sadly was to **** her off. Keep poking her mouth with it and she keeps grabbing it with her mouth to throw it away. Then syringe quick! Felt really cruel but she had to have it because was antibiotics or something.

Bailey is silly enough to eat anything. She would have hers and Binkys share of the syringe if we let her!
