Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Hi my missy bun has been poorly for 3 weeks now weight loss, swellings and stasis always picks up for a few days after fluids then downhill again, she is a dental bun needs teeth doing every 5-7 week's.
My vet came up with various diagnoses from myxo to tumor and after 3 weeks no improvement etc I pushed for referral to D1Ck vet, however my vet thinks thus is wrong thing to do that I'm just prolonging the inevitable and just have her put to sleep. I disagree she's still reasonably bright if a little lethargic she is on ab's, gi stimulants and lapizole as well as probiotics, I'm not looking for people to say I'm right or wrong because I feel I'm doing the correct thing. However I would appreciate some vibes also for the D1Ck vet does anyone who's used them know if they do direct claims if bun is insured? I have a credit card but i'd like to know in advance unfortunately she's going first thing in morning so unable to contact them tonight
Thanks

I have no idea how the D!ck vet school work, however I wish you luck with your referral. I've made similar choices with my buns previously and it's always paid off, so fingers crossed it does for you guys too :)

When we went to the vet school recently we just paid our insurance excess. Hope tbey can suggest something there are a number of very good vets there.

Thank you to both of u I hope I have done the right thing I'm going on gut instinct at the moment me and my missy bun have had a chat. it sounds ridiculous but I always ask my rabbits what they want and I think she wants to stay so I need a diagnosis rather than just treating for all possibilitys

I'd absolutely agree that you are doing the right thing too - why give up when you can get a specialist to try to find some answers for you first, especiallly if you have insurance, that's why you've been paying your premiums.

It might depend on which insurer you are with as to whether the D1ck vets feel they are likely to get paid by the insurer, I know my vet has more confidence with some (such as Pet Plan) than others.

Hope all goes well with the appointment tomorrow.

Just totally trust your gut because it will always be right. :) So, by that, I would say you've totally done the right thing :) I really hope you get a positive outcome.

Good luck for tomorrow, I hope you get some answers. From what I hear, the bunny vets there are excellent, and from what you say she is still bright and not suffering so it's absolutely 100% the right course of action. Even if they do sadly recommend that she is let go (which I sincerely hope they don't) at least you will be able to say goodbye when the time is right and knowing that you have tried all options.

Big hugs for tomorrow - please do let us know how she gets on xxx

My little girl has been kept in at the D1ck vet she's emaciated and very dehydrated and does require further tests but will need to be stabilised first, i am so worried and after speaking to a rabbit savvy vet regret not pushing for referral sooner, there is a few working diagnoses at present the main one being E-cuniculi they are blood sampling in the morning but right now they are syringe feeding and pushing fluids as her stomach is distended so they will put her on cisapride and zantac.
I'm worried about her but know she is in right place her prognosis is quite poor however I have her partner here what is the best way to disenfect the living area etc is there a certain disenfectant i should use he's been started on a course of lapizole as standard

I have always found that a 10% bleach solution is very good for disinfecting areas. What is it that you are disinfecting a outdoor cage, room, indoor cage???

It is good if you can rinse out/off afterwards. :p

Dog crate, with lino floored run but my living room is carpet how do I disenfect that as my lady had some accidents before referral where she peed on the carpet?

Is it the EC spores you are concerned about. If so these can be very difficult to eradicate. The best way for carpets would be using a steam cleaner as the high temp (over 100C) can kill them. Use bleach in the other areas.

Although if it is EC then the other bun probably is carrying already. Speak to your vet as they should suggest Panacur as a precaution.
