  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

I need some help please and someone suggested that Jane may be able to help?

Milo has had a blue eye, I took him to the vets they checked for a scratch nothing.
They suspect E cuniculi.

Ive got him on panacur and a eye drop with anti biotic and steriod in it.

He was also on baytril for 7 days.

I dont know what it is or what else to do :(

I think you'll need to clarify the situation.

What colour are his eyes normally?
Is it 1 eye or 2 that are affected?
Which part is blue?
When did you become concerned?

Only his right eye left eye is normal.

its been like it for 2 weeks never noticed it before but sought vet advice immediately.

Its on the brown but of his eye as per the photo.
Its not got worse but not got better

one of my fosters was like this. the vet suspected EC.

i was told as long as it didn't get any worse and he was wormed regularly it shouldn't be a problem though she also thought he was partially sighted in that eye as well.

when he was rehomed the lady that took him was told the same by her vet.
he was bonded and both are wormed evry 3 months and so far he hasn't gotten any worse.

hope milo is ok.

How old is he and is it "cloudy" rather than just changed colour to blue?
Just thinking cataracts (these can be age or EC related)?
The only real diagnosis would be to see an eye specialist if possible.

It looks like EC induced uveitis

He is on the correct treatment if this is the case. I have a Rabbit who had the condition diagnosed about 2.5 years ago and he was on Panacur, Baytril, Maxitrol (abx and steroidal eye drops)

He's been on the steriods for 2.5 weeks

Did your buns eye ever get any better?

He remained on Maxitrol for about 6 months but eventually I was able to stop it. He has had a couple of mild flare ups but no abscessation so far. There is always the chance that an abscess can occur and I have had one Rabbit for whom EC induced uveitis eventually meant he had to have the eye removed. But he coped perfectly well without it.

We have had two buns in the past with this as EC related - neither of them had any change in the eye after the initial change. The eye stayed the same and did not bother them.

He's back from the vets.
His eye pressure is high in bad eye.
He now has:

Eye pressure drops twice daily
chorophemical 3 times a day - his eye now shows as scratched
visco tears - his eyes are dry (both) 4-6 times a day
streptim - twice a day in case infection is in eye causing swelling
metacam - in case he's in pain
bio plas - some water pro biotic for him

she doesnt seem to think its EC related and now im just confused.

Jack Jane - she also mentioned I shouldnt have given him the maxitrol for 20 days its too long and can have caused long term damage?
