Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Myxi buns - weight loss/gain UD!!! :D

Tinsel

Wise Old Thumper
What are your experiences? How hard is it for a vaccinated bun with nodular myxi to gain weight? Any advice appreciated

Thankfully no first hand experience of caring for a Rabbit with Myxomatosis but any Rabbit fighting any sort of infection is unlikely to be able to gain weight. They will be burning off most of their calorific intake fighting the infection.

As Jane says really although it also depends on appetite with my girl she lost weight because she had a reduced appetite as part of the nodular myxi she felt grotty I think

Thank you. Mulberry is eating loads though, so it's not her appetitie that's a problem...

Is she actually losing weight ? If so that would be of additional concern and might indicate that her internal organs, especially her kidneys, have been effected

Is she drinking more than she used to ?

Luckily, no to both questions.

She does have lots of nodules though, and the one on her nose is huge.... Are these each like a mini-abscess maybe? She's just reaching week 4 of the myxi now, and is on baytril, septrin, metacam, fucithalmic eye ointment, and lapizole...

That's good news. It is probably as I said before, all calorific intake being utilised to fight the Myxi so no reserves to go towards weight gain.

You may find she struggles with weight maintenance throughout the winter too and I am sure you will keep a close eye on that issue xx

Oops - cross-edited!

Thank you. I will monitor. The problem is she's very much an outdoor bun, although she sleeps in the shed rather than a hutch so I could potentially lock her in on colder days. She and her partner tend to stay it when it's cold anyway and doze next to each other all day.

Hopefully not actual abscesses. The tissue will die off though and if the nodule on her nose is huge it may leave a nasty crater. So another thing to keep a close eye on with regards to bacterial infection/abscessation.

Thank you Jane. She's on antibiotics for another ten days and hopefully the nodules will have gone by then. Will be able to check nearer time/extend antibiotics if needed. xx

ETA Have just weighed her. She's been 2.15kg for the last week or so (she has been 2.47 in the past). The result of today's weigh-in: she's gone up to 2.21 kg :D:D:D

Glad she's gained weight. My Suki (vacs) contracted nodular at the end of Sept 3 years ago.
She had nodules for over 6mths, and did lose weight although not excessive. I tried to include weight-gain stuff in her treats - porridge made with water, etc, but it was up and down throughout the winter. I think its just a case of monitoring and upping food accordingly. She never lost her appetite so it really was up to what I fed
