  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Possible Mites?

Hi,

I've noticed Charlie has a patch on his back with less fur, although I've never seen him scratching that area. On closer inspection it looks like dandruff and flaky skin. I've looked at some pics of mites in rabbits and this does look the same. I feel awful because I actually noticed it about 2-3 weeks ago but he was just at the end of a major moult that lasted weeks and I thought it was just part of that (he looked like an old, flea bitten, moth eaten teddy during his moult!).

I bought some Beaphar Anti Parasite Spot On for Rabbits and Guineapigs and have just applied 2 tubes of it to the affected area.

I wondered if anyone has heard of or used this particular brand of treatment and whether over the counter treatments are usually effective or whether I should take him to the vets? Also, how long will it take to clear up?

Thanks x

I would not use any OTC preparation unless I was certain of what I was treating. To use an OTC product inappropriately may do more harm than good. If you dont know what the problem is I suggest that you consult a Vet to find out and to make sure the treatment given is A-suitable and B- likely to be effective

Good Luck :)

Thanks Jane I think you're right. I'll make an appointment with our vet to get a proper diagnosis, at least then I'll know he's got the right medicine for the right condition, like you say.

Much appreciated :)
