  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Combined vaccine: Reporting of suspected lack of efficacy.

There are a lot of concerns on here regarding a potential lack of efficacy of the new vaccine. If you have a vaccinated rabbit, that has contracted myxi and you and your vet have a real concern regarding the efficacy of the new vaccine (remembering that a rabbit can still get myxi if vaccinated, but should have much milder symptoms) please can I encourage you or your vet to report this to VMD in addition to the manufacturer. VMD are the government department responsible for veterinary medicines in the UK and there is a reporting scheme that they run in the same way MHRA run the yellow card system for human medicines. This also ensures that VMD have the information and will ensure that MSD Animal Health are appropriately logging reports that come in to them and fulfilling their obligations regarding the pharmacovigilance (the ongoing safety and efficacy) of their products.

A leaflet about the reporting system is here:

the user guide for the online form is here:

the form itself is here:
http://www.vmd.defra.gov.uk/adversereactionreporting/Product.aspx?SARType=Animal

which is from this page of the VMD website

This needs to be made a Sticky, I've asked the Mods if it can be. Thanks for posting it xx

I should also have said this is the same form you can use to report any adverse effect (i.e. a bad side effect) from a medicine but only where it is licensed for use, in rabbits. Off label use wouldn't be covered as it is accepted that the product is not licensed for or marketed for use in rabbits.

Yep, clients are meant to sign a Disclaimer for any OL Drug prescribed. That must include Metacam I guess :?

If it is made into a sticky then the title should really be changed to "How to report side effects and lack of efficacy" rather than pointing to the vaccine. At the moment that was the right title and a good way to raise awareness but for ongoing use we should change it.
