Rabbits and Anaesthetics

lucybis

Young Bun
Maggies only young but I'm hoping to have her spayed around christmas time. I'm worried about the anaesthetic though. I work in operating theatres and know how scary/traumatic an op can be for people so how do rabbits cope with them?! Does anyone know how the vets anaesthetise them? Or are there any tips to prepare her for surgery when the time comes? I've heard of rabbits not surviving the anaesthetic and it really worries me. Need some reassurance!

There's a few different anaesthetic protocols used but the most common one is explained in this thread:

In experienced hands its extremely rare to lose a rabbit under anaesthetic without an underlying health issue. I see a lot of threads where people are seeking to find the cheapest neuter but I personally think it's not something to compromise on for cost and I'd always go to the most rabbit savvy vet I could access - that's having gone through the experience of nearly losing one under anaesthetic.

Thank you, that's a useful link!

You're welcome. It's four years old but so far as I know the information is still up to date. For information Esme went to a specialist vet and was spayed using a different anaesthetic and got through the operaton without any trouble. Fortunately she's not needed a GA since then!
