  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

rabbits in heat??

I know does can be receptive as soon as they give birth, but is there a cooling off period ? for example, up to 2 wks after a cat gives birth they can re-mate and become pregnant again, but as long as you prevent this they'll go back to thier normal 6 monthly cycle. Also is it true that when a doe hits her 3 yr mark she stops breeding ?.

There is no 'cooling off period'

Does can still conceive after the age of 3

Rabbits are induced ovulators so when they are mated, that's when they release their egg. They don't have a 'heat' or 'season' but they do have times they may be more receptive than others. It's uncommon but not impossible that even a pregnant rabbit, if she is only pregnant in one horn, can get pregnant whilst pregnant. However, I only know of one rabbit this happened to- she had two tiny litters, two weeks apart.

What makes you ask?

As others have said, rabbits dont have seasons or come in heat. It is also dangerous to breed an older rabbit, particularly if she hasnt been bred before.
