Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Wet bum

bunny babe

Wise Old Thumper
One of my buns started with a wet bum just over a couple of weeks ago. She had 14 days of abx but just checked her again tonight and she is wet underneath again. I panacured her for 7 days. Her water sample that I took last week was clear.

Any ideas what else could cause this, she is fine within herself and is eating/pooping normally. No excess drinking. We will of course be taking her back to the vet.

Sounds like my Matilda! tho my tila drinks more than normal, is she bottled or bowl?

ive reccently swapped matilda from a bottle to a bowl 3 weeks ago and it cleared up over night, might be a total fluke, but its the only explination at the mo!

Did the problem stop when on abx ?

It is intermittent, seems to happen more of an evening as when I check her in the morning she is usually dry. It probably got less frequent during the 2nd week of abx, in fact the last couple of days she has been dry but tonight she is wet.

She has a bowl of water to drink from.

It may be that a much longer course of abx is needed. If the core of infection is deep within the bladder wall a urine sample may give unreliable (false negative) results. Perhaps discuss this possibility with the Vet and try a longer course of treatment (4 weeks). Baytril is generally a good abx for UTIs but your Vet may decide to use another abx this time.

An ultrasound of her bladder could provide info re any presence of bladder sludge which can cause intermittent incontinence

I'd keep a regular check on her weight too

She obviously has not been doing her pelvic floor exercises !!

:lol::lol::lol:

She had the abx beginning with an M (Marcobyl or something) as we were worried about getting Baytril into her squishy mouth . We will make another appt for her today.

Do you think I need to ask about a longer course of panacur too (she had 7 days when she had her first week of abx)?

She is overweight but will start to weigh her more regularly.

Thanks Jane.

A 7 day course of Panacur would not be long enough if being done to address any EC issues. The course would need to be 28 -42 days

Marbocyl is a similar abx to Baytril. Another option could be Septrin. Most Rabbits love it as it is banana flavoured.

I'd definately try to get her weight down if she is a bit.....ermmm...'voluptuous'. Carrying excess body fat may be contributing to her bladder problems. Do the weight reduction gradually though as losing too much too quickly can cause a lot of problems for Rabbits.

I agree with what Jane has said, but would also consider whether her back legs could be getting arthritic?

One of my geriatrics started wetting herself, generally overnight, and it seemed to me it was more leg pain. I think she was reluctant to move during the night when she was warm and comfy, and that exacerbated the problem.

She is still undergoing a 28 day Panacur course, and was tried on pain relief alone, but she lost the use of her one leg completely, was continually peeing on herself, and was having to be bathed twice a day to keep the skin healthy whilst we worked through her options.

Last week she was started on a steroid, and the difference has been amazing. In a week she has regained the use of her leg, has been dry for the last 6 days, and yesterday, for the first time in 2 years, started jumping onto the roof of her wind shelter.

Because they're so good at hiding pain it's not easy to spot hidden things like arthritis, but check her back legs - is there any muscle wastage? Does she hop any differently? See if there are any signs she may be getting a bit stiff.

I will try to get some weight off the voluptuous Cassie

Septrin sounds good. She ate all her panacur mashed with banana no problem. The panacur was a precaution so will ask about longer course for her.

She is only 4 but I guess we could get her checked for arthritis if the usual stuff does not work (x-rays I am guessing?)

Sorry for the brief reply but just on my lunch at work. She is booked in to see the vet at 5.20 tonight.

Little update. Got in from work and put her in the carrier, she was pretty wet so left it for the vet to see (probably one of the worst I have seen her) The plan is to do some tests, possibly blood, culture, x-ray before we give her new meds so try to find the cause and the right meds. Vet is going to ring me tomorrow with a plan to move forward. He couldn't feel any stones and when he felt her she was not in discomfort but only x-ray/ultrasound could eliminate this.

Tis going to be another long week................

Thank you. Cass is booked in tomorrow to have an x-ray in case of stones and also some bloods done too. Fingers crossed it is just a nasty uti.

Little update - she had conscious x-ray (as she was good girl) and all was clear and kidney etc were all right size. The vet said she had been eating grass and that she was lovely. The bloods have been sent off to to an exotics specialist place and we will hopefully get results back on Mon as they have to send them off and obviously weekend etc. I have everything crossed this is a stubborn water infection.

Great news re the Xray :D

Hopefully it will be just case of her needing a long course of abx to sort out her waterworks xx
