  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Hey,

My bun, Bumble, got ill around 4/5 weeks ago. He's been to the vets a number of times, 4 to be exact and 3 out of 4 of the vets automatically jumped to the conclusion it was mixxy and wanted to put him down on the spot. I said no as I wanted to give him a chance. If it was mixxy, he fought it off but then got a secondary infection that he isn't to good at fighting. But it might be something else, I'm not sure.

He has lumps/swellings around both eyes, though one is particularly bad and when I wipe it clean, the cotton bud comes away reddish/brown. His nose and mouth are swollen and look sore, and he also has difficulty breathing, its not in the lungs though, one of the more helpful vets checked thoroughly.

I increased the amount he eats, feeding him a number of times during the day and as much as he wanted because he is losing weight incredibly fast. Even with the amount he's eating, he continues to lose weight - he's been wormed recently, just in case its because of that but his brother shows no sign of having worms. He went from weighing 1120g on 21 September to now weighing 788g. He's still alert and he still wants to eat. He's his ol' self, only a little down in the weather and not moving very much. I'm really worried about him, and I'm just not sure what is wrong with him- is it really a secondary infection?

Bumble's going to the vets again on Monday, but my parents say that if he doesn't show any signs of improvement then chances are he'll have to be put down as they don't want to see him suffer. I'm really worried, I don't want to lose my baby boy

There are a few good threads about myxi on here at the min as unfortunately the weather this year has been perfect for the biting insects that spread myxi to breed. Do use the search function or just have a browse in the health section. What medications has your bunny been put on? It does sound like Myxi and if it is, your bunny will need his symptoms treating otherwise he will be in a lot of pain. You should have food to syringe feed him and painkillers at the very bare minimum. I don't know of any other conditions that have those symptoms apart from maybe rabbit syphilis but a good vet should have been able to spot that.
If your rabbit has got myxi, being vaccinated greatly increases his chances of survival.

Have your Rabbits been vaccinated against Myxomatosis ?

If it is Myxo then secondary bacterial infection is common and usually the actual cause of fatalities rather than the Myxo virus itself

I assume that your Rabbit is on an anti-inflammatory analgesic and antibiotics plus some topical treatment for his eyes ?

Thanks for the replies, however took Bumble to the vets today and sadly he was put down  it wasn't fair to keep him going with his condition deteriorating.

We're pretty sure he did have Myxomatosis, but the vet had a feeling that it was damaged caused by the virus that was actually the cause behind him loosing weight. He appeared to have fought the Myxo off, but he got a secondary infection despite the antibiotics ):
