Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Barbie the bun got her 1st myxomatosis vaccine done today...:)

she seems to be fine now.... just a bit tired after travelling to the vet

will book her in for VHD injection after 2 weeks...(cylap i think it's called?)

vet said to me that it's better to wait until she is more mature before getting spayed, ideally about 6 months...

*what do you guys think? I remember reading somewhere that the operation will become more complicated as the rabbit gets older?

How old is she now? 6 months sounds about right for a girl, it's more complicated than it is for the boys! I don't think the actual op gets more complicated as they get older, more that the aneasthetic is riskier in older bunnies. My girl was done at about 6 months :thumb:

Yeah, six months is about right for a girlie.

You are right, operations do get more risky in older buns, but that's on much older rabbits I would say 5/6 years old is when it would start to become slightly more risky. Still worth it tho! She needs to be an adult as it is quite a big op, you wouldn't want to put a baby through it.

Agree with everyone thats already posted, 6 months is about right! my m+f were done at 4 and a half months each though! although tbh it was in unusual situation as that was because we needed to get them bonded ASAP as Roo, my female, was becoming increasingly hormonal and driving herself mad! My other female was done at 5 and a half years old in August this year and got over the actual op fine. it was the recovery she struggled on, she got an infection in her bladder and then got stasis which was veeery stressful BUT definitely worth it!:D

Thanks everyone for reply! Barbie is 3months old now, so still have another 3 months until she get spayed then....:)

the operation sounds quite complicated to me as i read about the recovery bit...some buns not eating well after and some got infections...

hope she will be okay when she get it done :(

but i know that fact that it MUST be done for her long-term health....so try to make her stronger and ready! x
