Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Myxi and immunity

New Kit
Hi

My rabbits have both had myxi, starting about a month ago, the girl is over the worst now, but the boy is still struggling as he went full-blown. I received a reminder from the vet on Friday to say they are due to have their vaccinations now. Does my girl bun have immunity for a while? Presumably it is too soon after contracting the virus for her to be vaccinated, and she licks the boy's face a lot. Does anyone know how long they have immunity for, whether she could reacquire the virus from him, or from vectors as mxyi is rife at the moment?

Thanks for your reply.

I have looked but couldn't find anything specific. I will do a bit of research and if I find anything out will post it somewhere for future use in case anyone needs quick info.

I don't think vaccinating at the moment will be sensible as her immune system might still be compromised as she might still be in thre recovery stage.

Question:-If my rabbit has had myxi will they be immune?
Should I still vaccinate

Answer:-This is controversial, and it’s difficult to give firm advice here. I would prefer to err on the side of caution. Some references suggest lifelong immunity following recovery from natural infection, and others suggest absolute immunity for several months. Without performing antibody testing, it is best to assume that all animals are susceptible, and I would recommend vaccinating with both myxomatosis and RHD vaccines to afford the highest level of protection against both. The Myxo-RHD vaccine carries warnings to the effect that in rabbits with existing immunity to myxomatasis, there may not be a good level of post-vaccination RHD immunity. In such cases, a single RHD vaccine may be given 2 weeks after the combined vaccine.
