  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Weepy eye.

I've just come home from work to find my rabbit has one weepy eye. The eye is closed and has watery stuff on his fur around it. His other eye is fine and so is my other rabbit's. He is eating and doing everything else as normal. I am going to get him to the vet in the morning, but for peace of mind does anyone have any idea what it could be until then?

Yeah he is vaccinated. He had his injection again in August. His genitals don't appear to be swollen.

Sounds as though he may have conjunctivitis or sustained a hay stalk injury to his eye. Can you gently bathe it with cooled boiled water and check under the eyelid incase there is a foreign body lodged there. If there is and it is not removed it could potentially do a lot of damage to the cornea.

Just been out to check on him again. Eye is open and water around eye has gone. Boyfriend thinks I am mad!! Still taking him to the vets though and just bathed his eye. Thanks for all your responses.
