Probiotic and Recovery food

Hi

Jasper hasn't been eating properly since Friday. He's had some veggies but won't touch his pellets. He's been on recovery food but will be going back to the vets tomorrow.

He's already on Baytril and metacam due to his ear infection. Ive read that baytril can cause loss of appetite, hopefully that's all it is. Is it worth adding some probiotic into the recovery food mix? If it is the baytril affecting the good bacteria then surely adding probiotic can only help?

Does anyone know of a reason why we shouldn't add the probiotic?

Sorry to hear your bun is poorly.

Is he having painkillers? Metacam perhaps? If not I'd ask the vet for some. Pain is what usually puts them off their food. Baytril may 'upset' his tummy and probiotics are often given, I think it is best to give them a few hours apart from the antibiotic.

Hi,

Thanks for reply. He's on metacam yes.

Well the antibiotics are given morning and night. I was going to add some probiotic into the recovery food mix which he has throughout the day. Worth a try I guess. I was just worried there may be a reason I shouldn't do it

I know of no reason why not to give probiotics. Theoretically the antibiotic will kill off the probiotic but maybe some will get through - I always gave them to a bun I had who was on long term Baytril. Certainly continue after the cousrse of Baytril is finished for a while. We used Avipro from the vet which we sprinkled on food - I used to squidge the fluffy end of a piece of broccoli in it so I knew it was eaten.

Good luck, I'm not sure Baytril is always effective with ear infections (or anything else for that matter!)

A sample was sent off to be cultured and the vet said it was quite sensitive to baytril.

I'm not sure if his appetite loss is related to his ear infection, a touch of bloat or whether the antibiotics is causing it. Will see what the vets say tomorrow
