Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Rabbits - Running/swollen eye

R.P.B.G.G

Mama Doe
Wills our 5 month old French Lop has a swollen/weepy eye
Only 1 and on his right side.

His 3rd eye lid is showing slightly in the corner and if you pull his eye lid down (bottom one) it is very red.
He is still eating, pooping, weeing but not his normal self.

Has anyone had experience with this in young buns?

What was the outcome

Oh, should Bun has been to the vets today, has had an antibiotic via injection and to be given 1ml of Baytril for 4 days, If no improvement he is going to be put out and further investigations, Vet pretty much says what I already know, absess, teeth etc etc.

But wondered what the most likely outcome will be.
What are the chances that it is dental at 5months? He is a healthy eater, has been since we got him at 10weeks old.

The eat first become weepy 2 days ago, we cleaned it up and it seemed to improve, yesterday evening started to weep again, so we took him today.

He weighs 2.42

Just want my cheeky boy back

Starbuck has always had tear duct issues, which cause a weepy eye. They get blocked for some reason and then pus builds up and they can get infected. When he was a single housebun we had to keep them clean for him by gently bathing them, and then we applied Vaseline to the skin under his eyes to stop them getting sore. Ever since he has Muesli, Muesli does that job for us.

Not sure what caused it in the first place, he just always had problems. He is a dental bunny but doesnt have particularly bad tooth root elongation which can be one of the causes - the tooth roots press on the tear ducts and cause them to not drain properly. Starbuck just has to have them gently flushed now and again and occasionally needs drops applying.

I think it can be linked to pasteurella too but I think this would be more obvious if there is a wet runny nose as well.

In Starbuck's case he has just been diagnosed with a middle ear abscess which seems likely to be linked to his runny eyes, so that is another thought, but we have only found that out 2-3 years down the line and I really hope this is not the case for your bunny.

He has been put away for the night tonight, but will get pic in the mmorning,
The eye isn't really runny, it is more swollen under the eye lid,
Tonight it didn't seem so swollen, but don't want to keep poking and prodding him,
Last checked he was happily eating his dinner with his hutch buddy,
Will get that pic in the morning.
Hope it isn't anything bad, he's such a lovely boy, we lost a bun yesterday. So really hope he has just caught it/knocked it, he is a very energetic bouncy bun and runs in and out of a rhubard bush (giant rhubarb)
