  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

My Rabbit Is Losing Fur

Idk what it could possibly be.
His cage is clean, he has hay, water, food, bedding, and each day I let him out of his cage for an hour or two.
I thought maybe he was shedding his coat, but each and every time I pick him up there's hair all over me. I tried brushing him and so much hair was on the brush, enough to start making it into a bracelet. Recently I stopped letting him hump my foot, but I don't think that could affect his hair loss.

Rabbits molt. They usually molt with the change of seasons. They do loose all their coat and grow a new coat. Lots of brushing helps but until they are finished the fur will continue to come out like this. I actually do use some of Julie's white downy fur in crafts in place of cotton.

It's most likely a winter molt, nothing to be worried about! If bun is outside it will be so he gets a fluffy coat for the chilly weather. I keep mine in a little pot (not all of it obviously, just a little bit) so when my buns have passed, hopefully not for a long while, I have a bit of their fur

Rabbits can appear to moult all year; different times of the year they will appear to moult more though i.e. spring and autumn. Mine shed hair/fur every single day - it comes out in clumps sometimes. And it's everywhere ... luckily they live outdoors :thumb:
