day from hell yesterday - complained to my vet

Lea-Anne

Warren Veteran
Yesterday Vince my snuffle bun was fine, bouncy as always, ate his breakfast. That was about 11am then me and hubby were in the garden for the next two hours giving the shed bunnies a spring clean and new lino. Came back in and sat on the sofa and immediately knew something was wrong with V. He sat up, then down, the up, then down, in obvious tummy pain. We offered him food and all his favourite treats and he refused them.

My vets is amazing. I've been going to Fiona for 10 years or more, she treats all my rabbits with such compassion and has never once told me they are not worth the effort ( one time she took my ill guinea pig home with her). All the receptionists know V and love him and are so kind and friendly. Unfortunately my vets is closed at the weekends and you have to go to their sister practice ( which is actually closer to my house) but the vets switch and change every week and the attitude of the staff there stinks. Even the receptionists are rude and cold and look at me like I'm crazy when I say I'm bringing my rabbit in. Over the phone when I said he wasn't eating, woman said ' is that all? How do you know he is ill?'
The only other choice in a completely different practice ( never been to) but they were also closed and would charge emergency call out fee. The other practice was still consulting so would be normal price. As we had faith in neither we chose to go to them after much arguing between me and hubby. He didn't want to take him there since they did nothing to help our previous rabbit Dennis. I was in bits getting to the surgery, didn't want to be there, brought back all the horrid memories of Dennis being ill and then picking up ( according to them fine) not eating/ not pooing and generally letheragic only to have him die the next morning. It was heart breaking.

At the surgery the vet looked at me like I was mental ( because I had tears in my eyes), V was sat up, sniffing the computer and I got told he was ' bright enough' ( words used to describe dennis also). I said 'he has obvious tummy pain and has refused all food.' I suggested an x-ray, to which she said no, he's too bright (??) I don't want to knock him out. We feared he had a blockage as some of the lino had been nibbled. The vet said ( and I don't know if this is true or not) that '' he would not of injested any of the lino. They bite things and tear off mostly and if they do eat things they grind it finely so it's unlikely to cause problems, it's not like a dog eating a ball for example. '' She couldn't feel any blockages so said gut stimulant.
Then '' we *may* consider giving him pain relief.'' Wth?? Me : '' I want him to have pain relief please.'' Then she said ' I'd like to admit him so we can keep an eye on his eating and pooing'' to which I said '' I'd rather take him home please.'' Vet looked unimpressed. I said '' I'm sorry but I know he'll be more comfy at home and we can spend all evening tempting him with foods we know he loves.'' I was probably a bit rude but I was upset.
He had a gut stimulant, metacam and abx and looked drugged the first hour he got home but then thankfully started eating again. My husband had to tempt him with all kinds, the first being a shreddie of all things lol We then tried EVERYTHING we could think of and had to keep putting grass, dandelions and pellets in front of him and he started to come round. Finally he started eating hay.
He's bouncy as this morning, so relieved I cannot explain. Spent all of yesterday in tears. I just get the impression they could not give a stuff about rabbits, I wonder if the would have a different attitude to a dog or cat.

What an awful vet  If that was me I'd be writing a letter to the local paper discouraging other bun owners from using them. But then I've always been one to vent my anger  Hope V is feeling better soon :)

Me thinks if youd have left him there, you wouldnt have got him back.
My guess is that when she said she wanted to keep him there, she was saying Im the Vet, trying to be assertive when she knew naff all.
Good on you.

I just hate them. I know I was upset and I know I probably spoke quiet abruptly but he is my pet and I was so frightened and I love him so much and then there was the fear of taking him there. They look uninterested.
When she said he'd be better here I tried to be tactful and said ' ummm no I want to take him home with us. I have meds, I can force feed if necessary. We had a bad experience leaving our last rabbit here' to which she replied ' well animals die. We do what we can but it happens.. ' Just what you want to here

Thankyou xx I think that too. Hubby and I sat for three hours coaxing him to eat, trying everything under the sun until a shreddie worked and then I was throwing all kinds at him - his favourite treats, whatever, anything to get him interested. From past experience I know once you get them interested in food you don't stop. I don't think they would of done that. Plus he is a snuffle bun so constantly at the vets anyway and gets very stressed being there, he wets himself everytime so leaving him in a strange kennel, probably with dogs etc would not of helped. He's a house rabbit. As soon as he got home he visably relaxed

The only other thing we could think of was he ate half of one of those treat honey sticks the night before?
Could that give them an upset tum???
Think there off bounds now

 Vets were shocking Leanne, no wonder you were upset. Glad the meds worked pretty quickly for him and he started to eat, he is such a little character

I think Kath's vet is open of a weekend but it is probably quite a way to go with a poorly bunny.

ETA - do you want me to bring you some pro-fibre to try next weekend. Mine tend to eat this before their normal pellets and it is pre/pro biotic. I tend to give them this as their "treat" rather than buying stick things too, along with fenugreek crunchies of course ;)

I've had such bad experiences with vets lately I won't consider going to another appointment without taking a voice recorder. You can write to the practice manager voicing your concerns and if you are unhappy with the reply you can go to the RCVS (I think they're called). I've asked for a rubbish vet who was dismissive towards my rabbit and said the most ridiculous things and then denied her an appointment when she was no better, to provide the vet with professional development so that she is competent to treat rabbits. If the manager says no, I know where I shall be taking my complaint to. Rabbits can't stick up for themselves. We pay them to help our rabbits, not to stand there being clueless and dismissive towards them.
Glad your bun is feeling better.

Was at my regular vets today for my dog's annual booster and mentioned to one of the vet nurses the way I was treated by their sister company/ emergency practice.
I asked if it was because V was a rabbit and thought of as a less worthy pet but she said no, they get various complaints about the other practice and it's down to their attitude. She said they are much more clinical and hospital/business like, whether it's a dog/cat/rabbit. They hear it a lot. Then she said ' here, we love rabbits ' :love:
I thanked her and said that I appreciated all they do. I'm sure they don't hear it enough :)

Aw, at least you have expressed your concerns and I am sure your usual branch appreciate your kind comments x

Just wanted to say I think you did the right thing, buns can't speak and as owners we know them best and it's our job to stick up for them. Good for you. So glad meds worked quickly, it's awful when they don't eat. Lousy vets though, quite shocking.

It is staggering how bad vet attitude to rabbits can be some times. Since you get on well with your regular vet why don't you ask her if there are any vets she could recommend when she is not around - maybe even from other local surgeries? Since rabbits are a bit specialist she might well be willing to do that (she's not criticising collegues - just recognising that some are better with rabbits). We have a list in our heads of who to ask for next (and next and next!) for times our excellent vet is not available. A list we got from him.
