  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Poop question

Chapin's never had a bad stomach in the year we've had her (before we knew better than to keep them out the way she got into a packet of malteasers in a carrier bag and box, and she's managed to get on top of the kitchen table before and ran off with a biscuit >.<).

Her poop has never been a problem, but comparing it to Seeley's, it's never quite as big and brown.

This is his and hers today, they get fed exactly the same (slight variations in veg but not much, unlimited hay, shot of burgess/ss at the moment every evening).

Today probably isn't the best day to show a comparison as she's been in the garden for a few hours so has had some grass and he's been inside. But hers are always darker and smaller than his (which are always light brown and big), but usually they are lighter and bigger than what she's producing this evening.

However, with no comparison I didn't realise how little hay she eats, she still manages a large handful a day I'd say, but Seeley is practically none stop!

Would you say it's problem that she doesn't eat as much hay as he does? I don't want her to have any long term effects. She does go outside quite a bit so she gets grass too, she also really enjoys bark off apple branches but it's difficult to provide her with a lot of them, I got a massive amount of them and she'll strip a dozen foot long branches a day if I let her. I can't constantly go around hacking off random apple branches, although I've spotted a new one along the canal and am going to attack that tomorrow or Friday!).

Are things like brambles good alternatives for rabbits that don't want a lot of hay? I live practically next to the canal and there is hawthorn, brambles, and rose down there, and I'd assume it's fairly clean as long as it's not at dog level.

Different rabbits eat different amounts of hay and as she is eating grass as well I wouldn't worry I have a lot of bunnies with slightly different coloured poops and sizes. Some are getting on in age with no health problems. I am not sure about the bark, I know wild rabbits strip it off branches but mine don't get any. Readigrass is very popular with all the buns. Hope this helps.
