  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Microchipping

Young Bun
Has anyone had their buns microchipped?
I had planned to get them done on saturday as its part of RAW week and my local vets are offerering microchips for £7.99 and free health checks, claw clips & goody bags.

But is it worth it? Will it hurt them?? :(

Ours are done and I took Ori for his and he didn't bat an eyelid. I personally think it's worth it. I'm sure they must feel it, but it's over in a flash and I don't think it's awful for them. Maybe like having your ear pierced (except they're not sat there waiting for it to happen!)

I have heard that micro chipping causes cancer. Is it a prejudice or there is something true about it, how do you think?
I am really interested since I am planning to move out of the country, and I will simply suffer like hell if I don't take my bun with me.Of course, there are many other checks to do as well, but it is one of the things

My cats and dogs were all chipped. I do not believe it causes any problems- chips sometimes move but they are so tiny they cause no harm. when ever i took a kitten or puppy to vet to be done they didn't even flinch when they were done- even my very wimpy current dog didn't mind.

I've had both my cats chipped and Harry's wifeybun to be has been chipped(they chip them at the rescue) it's over quick but I'm still not sure why you'd have it done unless you were worried about theft of escape!

I have never heard that or seen any evidence to suggest it. There is evidence that vaccinations in cats cause cancer (fibrosarcoma) but that is thought to be related to adjuvents in the vaccines rather then the injection process. Bristol are I think doing research on this and collating info (one veterinary university is).
