Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

vaccinated rabbits contracting myxi

ElsasMummy

Warren Scout
Hello,

I am in a difficult position deciding whether or not to vaccinate Elsa due to her health problems (of course I know the vet is the one to really help me make this decision- we have discussed it but just wanted some clarification.) I'm v worried as I've seen myxi in the area.

If a vaccinated rabbit is bitten by a flea/mosquito carrying myxi will it definitely get the nodular form or is it only a proportion of vaccinated rabbits that do not build up full immunity?

I know the vaccine is essential in healthy rabbits but in an old less healthy rabbit is it worth taking the risk of vaccination side effects if myxi can still be contracted anyway?

So torn, just want to do the best thing.

With the new vaccine I don't think nodular myxi is a risk anymore, but I'm not totally sure about that.

What is wrong with her health at the moment?

From what I have seen over the past month in a high mosquito area. With the new vaccine, some rabbits will get nodular (swollen nose/lumps on nose and eyes) and be ok eventually, some wont show any signs at all. I have also had some who have had to be pts even after having the new vaccine.
