  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Injections first or spaying?

Do you mean vaccinated ? If so then yes. She can have the new Myxo/VHD combination vaccine from the age of 5 weeks.

yes thats what I meant I will go to the vet tomorrow and book her in for the injection. We think we need her spaying asap as shes starting to nip and chew on everything and we have read in several places having them spayed not only helps them avoid cancers etc but helps them calm down as well.

I would say vaccinate first then spay. The risk of disease is the greater immediate risk for a lone female and you never know what she might be exposed to at the vets whilst in for the spay.

I would leave it a good 3-4 weeks after the Vaccination before you get her spayed. This will allow for the vaccine to produce a full immune response.

I pick my bunny up next saturday, she will be 8 weeks old.

When should she have her vaccinations, does she need time to settle first?

Perhaps pop up a thread asking for a rabbit savvy vet in your area?? Vets arent always clued up on bunnies, awkward individuals,lol......bunnies i mean, not vets...I think...

Personally I would want to find another vet that actually did them younger. I got one of mine, roobear, in October, at 7 weeks, 6 days (so practically 8 weeks old) and we actually took her in for her first jab, the Myxomatosis one, the day we got her and a general check up. We thought it was easier to get the stress over and done with, but Roo is a very chilled bunny travelling as it is! She got plenty of squees from the vets as she was so small :p Its up to you, but I would personally do as yvette said and start a new thread seeing if there are any recommended vets around you that might do it sooner :D
