  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

UPDATE Tango is home with lots of meds...

Thank you, he has seen my favourite vet, who saw Finx home safely when she stopped eating after her spay. He is a bit bloated and has been kept in for fluids, gut stimulant and pain killers, and so they can monitor his toiletting. So worried, I have to go to work now and wait :(

Try not to panic - Tango is in the best place. All fingers and paws are crossed here. x

Thank you for your kind posts. The vet was concerned about a possible blockage so did X-rays. While Tango was out they checked his teeth and took a large amount of fluid and what looked like sludge out of his gut with a tube! They spoke to a specialist about this who advised them to use his blood glucose level to help them judge whether this has been enough or whether he will need surgery :( As it is, his blood glucose is normal so he has fluids, painkillers and gut stimulating meds. I went to visit him and he ate 2 ss pellets so I left him some more. The nurse seemed optimistic, he is being monitored overnight. More waiting for me and his wifebun :(

If all goes well tonight and he is ready to come home tomorrow evening, do you think their bond will be affected by their time apart and the weird vet smells? I took Finx with him originally but the vet needs to monitor how much Tango is passing, which would be difficult if Finx was there.

You may have to keep them apart until he is better and then rebond them. Some bonds can break down as a result of one Rabbit being admitted.

Hopefully not :( My only spare housing is an indoor cage that's too small to shut anyone in. They might have to make do and take turns in the garden if they fall out! Fingers crossed he will pass something tonight and be accepted home tomorrow... although he might have to stay inside for a few days to recover anyway? Will see what the vet suggests and go from there. Right now I will concentrate on wishing him well! :(

We have just ONE POO! But it's a start. He is eating hay quite well, we are just waiting for him to pass it through before he can come home. His blood sugar levels are still normal.

Finx is starting to miss him - she just thoroughly groomed me, which she used to do all the time when she lived indoors but she hasn't done since we rescued Tango and bonded them. I must have looked a picture, sat in their run almost moved to tears! Hopefully our silly orange friend will be home tomorrow.

He is coming HOME!!

Lucy just rang - he has been munching hay and left us 30 poos last night (yes they counted ). He will continue having fluids while I'm at work today and assuming nothing else happens he can come home tonight :D

So relieved!

He's home, more advice please? (sorry!)

Me again :) Tango is home, with a lot of meds that I'm a bit worried about giving him...
He has metacam, fibreplex and zantac, along with some biolapis for his water. He was really pleased to see Finx, no scuffles just grooming and sniffing.

Since he's been home, he's had quite a lot to drink, eaten some hay and produced some small poos :thumb:I'm reluctant to put Finx back outside but I really need to monitor how much he's going. She'll have to keep coming in for regular visits until he's ready to go back outside! He has a vet check on Saturday morning.

Any advice on the best way to approach his meds? He's a big bun and not so easy to handle... although apparently the zantac tastes like mint so that might be ok.

You should be able to mask them in basil leaves it works with all 4 of mine, then we don't have the stress of fighting with the syringe

Glad your bun is home, you might find the recovery is quicker now in familiar surroundings
