Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Do you have to use rabbit panacur? Can you use others?

Hi,

I am thinking of Panacur-ing my bunnies, as one was a rescue bunny so no idea what he was exposed too. Just to be safe.

I have seen some rabbit panacur in a paste but wondered if people use that or use any other type (such as the ones for dogs/cats), which may be cheaper!

Hope you can help :)

Hi!

I have only ever used the paste and that was prescribed by our vet.

It's good fun getting it into them ...

I got it down to a fine art come about day 7. It's only a 9 day course ...

i used lapizole, exactly the same a panacur but i'm told it has a better taste for the bunnies.
i mixed it in with banana and they ate it happily without the stress of me sryinging it for 28 days!

28?!

Panacur's only 9.

for complete parasite annihilation it's 28 days I believe. sounds like an absolute nightmare either way **looks over to her escape artist wriggly bunny**

he thinks he's jack sparrow "you will remember this as the day that you almost caught captain Buckley bun Juan!"

Get the one for bunnies :) or lapizole.

Didnt have any problem getting it into 3 of the buns here, they just lapped it up straight from the syringe, but the other was increasingly fussy and I had to keep hiding it in different stuff as she got wise to it quickly

It is 9 days for worms, 28 days for parasites like E.C.

Bear in mind, depending on the weight of your bun and how long you are doing it for, you may need more than one packet. I think there are 18 of the lines that indicate one dose for <2.5kg buns (but I found the last line was empty on a couple) double check before you give it obviously but thought you might want to know so you know how many to order :) I got mine online from animed as it was cheapest there.

I recommend the rabbit paste. I have tried the 10% panacur liquid and I have tried Lapizole, neither worked out very well. The medicine is the same, so you can use them if you want, I just found them harder to deliver. You have to give them more of each as they aren't as strong.

You can use the 10% dog and cat panacur if you want it cheaper (thats what I use) though they dont like the taste. Dont know the dosage off the top of my head but your vet should know :) It needs to be a 28 day course to count against E.cuniculi which is what most people are wanting it to do.

I may be wrong, but I thought it wasn't recommended to use Panacur as a 'just in case' medicine - ie if no symptoms?

I use the 10% liquid (cat/dog) at a dose of 0.2ml per kg (you need to weigh your bun to work out how much you need) as I have a lot of buns and its more cost effective for me.

This is one of those mixed views

Some people say it can change how efficient it is when treating EC as the body becomes almost numbed to it, like when you use too much of a certain abx and the body becomes resistant to it. I agree with this thought.

Others say its good as a preventative and a lot of vets recommend doing so. My vet isn't one of those and is of the same ilk as me, why give a rabbit a med without reason.

I share your opinion!

I always use the 10% cat/dog liquid as it's exactly the same product, just more of it for less money! I only treat if there are signs of worms or EC and never as a preventative measure.
