  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

how long should a course be given for? the most has been 10 days for charlie but it came back and his symptoms hadnt completely cleared.should i try 3 weeks? i have a supply from vets as they said to give him some when it flares up but just for 5 days at a time. but i would really like to try and get rid of it for good or at least try. same goes for honey0i think theyve given up on her since the hay was found up her nose.:?

Lots of short courses (5 days) could do a lot more harm than good. Antibiotic resistance being just one potential issue.

Personally I would not want to just keep pumping Baytril into a Rabbit and I would want further investigation as to the root cause of the problem.

If the Baytril has been dispensed into another bottle-ie it is not still in the manufacturer's bottle it will only be OK to use for a short time.

My advice would be to take both Rabbits back to the Vet and request that he/she considers possible causes for the recurrent RTIs

right ok, its just so frustrating! teeth are fine so its not that. should i go to another vet for a second opinion?

I would want to discuss further investigations rather than just being given Baytril.

So things like nasal swabs, skull radiographs (it is tooth ROOTS that can cause nasal problems)

I would not feel OK about consulting a Vet who's only suggestion was '5 day courses of Baytril' time and again.

ok well he has had a skull x-ray and roots were ok but i will discuss further with my vet, thank you
