  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Help please, rabbit no pooing for 3 days, advice on medications.

Hi, My rabbit snowy has been poorly again but nothing seems to work, I took him to the vets yesterday they gave him 2 injections, no change today took him back to the vets again she then gave him 4 injections which was 0.10mls zantac, 0.20ml meloxicam, 2mls enrofloxacin,2mls metoclop, still no pooing except jelly, they send him home with metoclopramide and enrofloxacin and lectade whichis for cats and dogs. What concerns me the most is the vet wants me to give him a full twosyringe fulls of enrofloxacin tomorrow twice it seems such a lot but my own vet is away on holiday so I dont know what to do or with the lectade.

Poor thing! I'm glad to hear you've seen the vet.
Perhaps call and get them to clarify?

What size syringes did they give you for the enrofloxacin? 1ml syringes?
The instructions "give 2 syringes full" seems odd... Could they have meant this for the hydration fluids instead?

If the vet felt there wasn't an obstruction, then getting fluids into him asap would be beneficial I think.
Even better, some subcutaneous fluids.

Hi, yes the whole syringe is 1ml and its says on the medication take 2ml of enroflaxacin twice daily which is 4ml a day, I think she got it wrong but I dont know. Has anyones rabbit had this medication before if so how much did you give them. Thanks

Depends on the weight on the bunny and the % solution of Baytril (enrofloxacin) - not sure of the % solution but my 1.7kg boy is prescribed 0.8ml twice a day. Maybe give emergency vets a call to clarify.

Hi, I have just been in contact with the emergency vet and she said that its a very high dose because hes in critical condition, hes still not passing anything but jelly, Im so worried about him, hes had this sort of thing eversince I bought him but always pulled through but nothing is working.

Is he eating or being syringe fed at all? Is this a rabbit specialist vet? I would suugest as it seems he is very poorly that he be referred to a rabbit specialist if you still are unsure about what is causing this problem and if he has been having problems for a while. I would suggest trying bio lapis and fibreplex to try and help his guts.

Have they given him any fluids at all?

Hi, I am syringe feeding lectade fluids every 4 hrs and metoclopramide 3 times a day and enrofloxacin just 2ml today. I was really annoyed with the vet because he expected me to cut a small metoclopramide tablet into quarters, i told them that i usually have liquid but they didnt have any. Anyway overnight he is now beginning to pass poos lots of them still a little jelly but at least something is coming out. I had to give him a wash as he had got so smelly underneath, but now hes eating parsley, blackberry leaves and grass but not nuggets. He has had a drink by himself too but I will still give him extra fluids as instructed by the vet. Hopefully things are looking better for him. Thanks for all your replys.

This sounds hopeful! Hopefully he's turned the corner now and fully recovers.

You mentioned Snowy is prone to these episodes. If you have a good relationship with your regular vet, maybe you can discuss keeping some of these meds at home for the future?

Glad he is doing better. As Jerseygirl says, have a chat with your normal vet. Also see if you can get some critical care food to feed him when he is poorly.

It may also be worth looking into pro-fibre pellets or some other probiotic as a regular thing.

So sorry Snowy is so poorly. Its good he has eaten and passed something though, I will keep my fingers crossed for you both.

Hi, thanks for your replys, snowy is now finished his meds and is eating normal now his poos are not quite right but he has never passed a round poo in his life they have always been grape shape all sizes. Hes had the jelly problem ever since ive had him, i have asked the vet why this happens they just say they dont know.

Sounds like he is on the mend now.

You could ask Thumps_ on here if she could advise, I think she is one of our experts in rabbit digestion/poop ;) Hope she doesn't mind me mentioning her

you could maybe also do a search of jelly poo or something like that

Some of the things you've said remind me of megacolon bunnies. He does fits the colouring for those rabbits predominantly effected by this: mostly white with brown eyes and some colouring around the eyes.

How old is he?

Hii, he is 3 and a half years old and that sounds just like snowy, he is mostly white, brown eyes and colouring round the eyes just like having black eyeliner on with colouring. I will look it up to see what megacolon bunnies are. Thanks
