Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Insurance with a pre-existing condition

Hi all,

Neither of my two buns are insured. I considered it for a while but decided against it for various reasons.

A couple of weeks ago Misfit had a bout of stasis. When I took them for their vaccinations yesterday the vet also said her teeth were misaligned and were likely to need filing at some point in the future. I get the impression Misfit is going to become an expensive bunny over the years!

I am considering getting her insured but know that a lot of insurance companies won't cover for 'pre-existing medical conditions'.

So my questions are:
- Would one bout of stasis count as a 'pre-existing medical condition'?
- If so, do you know of any insurance companies that will cover pre-existing conditions?
- What are people's general opinions on insurance? I have worked out that I'd have to spend around £300 a year before insurance became worthwhile (i.e. around £20/month for the both plus a £50 excess if I need to claim). I know that most years I probably wouldn't spend this, but then of course it covers you for unexpected big bills.

I can't answer about the stasis I am afraid.

I have 5 of my 11 insured and am thinking about some of the others. Some of mine would have too many exclusions. Plus I can afford it when they get ill.
For example, my Poppy had impaction recently and treatment came to over £500. I don't have her insured, and money was never a question. If she could get better then I would pay what it takes, thats what savings are for right??

I work at a vets and I always advise insurance, we see it far too often when an animal cannot be treated because owner cannot afford the treatment and it is not insured. It breaks my heart when an animal cannot receive all the treatment that it needs just because the owners can't afford it.

I think the question is can you afford it if your bunnies do become ill and need treatment? My Jaspers leg amputation should have been well over £600 but I didn't need to worry about that.
