  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Clipping Nails Question

Tallgirl

Warren Scout
Hello

When would you recommend clipping nails and is this best done at the vets? Thank you!! :D

It depends on the bun! Some grow more quickly than others and some get worn down more than others - I get them done before they start curling at the tips, when you start to see them past their fur.

Lots of people do it at home, but I take mine to the vets as I'm not confident doing it alone and my OH is scared of Finx

The fur around the paw is a great length to cut the claw to.If its a black claw then one has to be cautious you dont get the nerve....have some baking powder handy in case you snip too much and it bleeds.

If you dont feel confident get the vet or vet nurse to do it...or show you until you do feel you could have a go.xx

Thank you! I think I'll take them to the vets, I don't want to a) hurt them or b) make them hate me!!

I took them to the vets and can confirm that I won't be doing them at home in a hurry!! I think I was more nervous then they were!! The vet gave them a sneaky once over too! :D

Think I'll be taking mine to the vets on Tues for the nurse to do it. Just had a big struggle to pick her up and hold her while OH put some Sudacreme (sp?) on her slightly sore hocks. Was hoping to hang on a bit as I'm in the middle of getting them used to being handled so feel we'll be back to square one after a trip to the vet!
